  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is the meaning of life? What is the meaning of my life?

I can tell you my own personal experience. Before I was a Christians, for a few years while I was studying at a university, I was looking for the meaning of life. I tried to find it in philosophy. I tried to find it in my study. The question bugged me every week. I even wrote a research paper on it for one of my classes. I couldn't get a satisfactory answer for years. I thought: Perhaps when I find a wife, I'll know it. The question just kept bugging me. Something was missing in my life and I didn't know what.

Then one day, I became a Christian. A year later, I realized that I hadn't asked that question in the past year. If you ask me now: What is the meaning of life?

I will answer: Whatever it is, I find it in Jesus. I have it in Jesus. The question no longer bugs me :)

Billy Graham:

We all have a hunger in our hearts for God — an empty place in our souls that only He can fill. The Psalmist in the Bible put it this way: “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42:2).
Solomon wondered about the meaning of life. Ecclesiastes 1:

2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”
What is the meaning of life? What is life?

Life is animation or animated action. It is what we do.

In terms of length, life, as we know it, consists of two parts: the present part and the eternal part. The purpose of present life is to get a pass to eternal life. The present life is a testing place for everyone.

What is the meaning of our present lives?

God answered it in Isaiah 43:

7 "everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”
From the Creator's point of view, the meaning of our lives is to glorify Him.

How do we glorify God?

Jesus put it this way in John 10:

10 “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
Believing in Jesus is how we may glorify God.

Pragmatically, how do we glorify God?

I find something I enjoy doing, am passionate about, and excel at.

It's an interesting question to think about and ponder.
I appreciate the way that you talked about several different aspects to the question... The biology, the metaphysical or spiritual component, and of course some Biblical mentions. Different answers even though the question remains the same.
What I liked best, Tony, was the personal aspect of the answer... your experience in wrestling with the age-old question.

(According to The Hitchhiker's Guide", the answer is 42.)
