Is belief in your God the meaning behind existence, as you see it, then?
Not 'my God',mate. The GOD.By the way, there's a nice video on "VATICAN" site . Pope meet/greets (makes friends with ) a whole crowd o'Buddist Monks. Eternal stuff can be described as an "IS". Like math is.matter is,energy is, time is,(always was & will be) GOD IS. These things 'are" whether we can perceive/believe/conceive/ etc or not.

Which direction do you go to find your god, towards the inner world, or the outer world?

Ho Toi (the laughing Budda) There is a direct molecular link(atom bumps atom) between U & ME & the star Antares,my friends stinky horsebarn;everything or unthing; and GOD & HIS cosmos. A bigger boggle of a question is where 'ISN'T' GOD.
You do not identify with the standard Christian view of god, that he is external to the self?

Standard Christian view being that God is separate from the self, therefore God is external to the self.

Neither, since I don't believe in the literal existence of any God.

However, if we get "symbolic" or "aesthetic" about the issue, I still wouldn't choose any of the above layers. I'd probably look to personal potential (one's ideal self) as a symbolic kind of god. Perhaps that would refer to the "inner world" as a whole, but wouldn't really fit on the chart in any literal way, since there is no part of oneself that is one's ideal self -- that's more of a power one has to actualize one's nature along a certain path, and it is difficult to pin that down to any particular layer.

I would suggest that you're working towards the "inner world" which involves stripping off that which is less than ideal in order to reach the ideal.

How do you go about seeking to know the mind of God in a reliable and verifiable way?
Aristotle would say follow the logic chain. If GOD is perfect/good then any thought/idea any of us ever have which is life affirming is by definition a Godly thing. Conversely all evil intent is B.A.D.

I have heard many rationalizations for this, but maybe you have something different.

How do you reconcile a perfect/good God, with the realities of the world?
