What is the "law of thy mother"?

Instruction is from the father. Instruction is imparting knowledge. seems to me it means that the do's and dont's are learned from the mother and after those years the father teaches why. Just a guess.

The Hebrew word for "law" in Proverbs 1:8 is "Torah". It is possible that the "mother's rules for her children" that ewq1938 mentioned is the Torah of YHWH.

it's either anything taught to a child by its mother,

or

the mother is symbolic for the land or nation of Israel and thus the law/teaching in this case refers to the Torah.

"Mother's law" is Torah emcha. Since Torah is more properly translated "instruction" or "teaching," it should be clear.

Interesting, the "instruction" which comes from the father is Musar. It is an ethical and relational teaching.
