um.. i have to disagree with you all. I think there are different levals of sin. Murder is worse than stealing a video game. Yes they're both sins, but one is much greater than the other. Can I get an amen on that? Yes, a sin is a sin, but there are different levals..... I'm not sure what the GREATEST sin is though....there are so many very bad sins

Yes all Sin is Sin and it all hurts God, but I strongly beleive that some Sins hurt God more than others and I think I have Biblical support for this. I wont go into it now but I sincerely disagree with the All Sins are Equal teaching.

However the different levels of Sin doesnt mean that its right to do the smaller sins.

Do you by any chance derive some of your thinking on this issue from the theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer? How does his idea of responsible action play into this?

Some believe that it is Pride, that which motivated the Devil and our early parents to overstep the bounds God had established. If the highest virtue is love (ICor.13:13), perhaps it's opposite is the refusal to love: I talk about love , but like the Parable of the Good Samaritan, it is too easy to pass by opportunities to show active love. Is there a greatest sin at all? Just wondering, Al

I believe the greatest sin is turning away from God and serving the self. It's failure to worship him. I believe its idolatry and selfishness to sum it up. Not focusing on God or the well being of others.

I believe the greatest sin (unforgivable sin)is called 'Blasphemy against the holy spirit'

Bassically, It is when you know the truth of Jesus and God, but actually let words out of your mouth saying differently, words against this truth. All devils have commited this, they know that God is lord, and Jesus is the only way for us to achieve salvation, but they still try and decieve and preach against this truth to us (through people or in our minds)

God protects people of God from commiting this I think though.

Whatever your favorite sin is, that's the greatest sin!

Seriously, there is no point in human beings ranking sins. We don't have the ability to know which ones are worse than others because we can't see all the effects each sin has. Only God can know.

People usually want to rank sins so they can feel like their particular favorite sin isn't so bad compared to all the other bad sins out there.

But really, your personal sina are the only one that matter, because those are the ones that separate you from God, those are the ones you can repent of.

So, don't worry about how your sin ranks with everyone else's. Your sin is bad, so bad that unless you admit you are a sinner who needs a savior, you can't be cleaned of it at all!

This is a fantastic answer, and I believe it to be true.

Some of you really amaze me. I don't understand how some people can be so confused. Why debate such nonsense? Have any of you read the Bible? Does God lay out a table saying "this sin is worse than this..."? No, he doesn't!

"For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it." James 2:10

When it comes to Christians & sin, they are all, sadly, equal with eachother. We would like to think we are "better" Christians, since all we do is occassionally lie or covet and so on. But the truth is, God doesn't say "BlueRose, good job, you only told a white lie! That's so much better than murder." No, every sin, no matter how "tiny", at one point eternally separated us from Christ.

Now, I'd have to agree with a number of you who mentioned "unbelief." The "greatest sin" is never accepting Christ as your savior. God cannot forgive the nonbeliever when they die--they cannot be saved from hell at that point. For us who are Christians, however, our sins may produce worse consequences in our and others' lives, but they are not on a scale in God's eyes.

I found biblical evidence for my above post.
Matt. 12:31-32

"And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirity will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come." NIV

Jesus obviously makes a distinction between this sin and others. In my above post I gave my thoughts on what this sin actually was, don't have any evidence for this though.
