What is the greatest sin?

Some believe that it is Pride, that which motivated the Devil and our early parents to overstep the bounds God had established. If the highest virtue is love (ICor.13:13), perhaps it's opposite is the refusal to love: I talk about love , but like the Parable of the Good Samaritan, it is too easy to pass by opportunities to show active love. Is there a greatest sin at all? Just wondering, Al

Hey Stephen: I wonder if the blasphemy ag. the Holy Spirit is a very restricted sin. In v.30 Jesus seems to identify this sin, "He said this because they were saying 'He has an evil spirit'"". When the religious leaders of Jesus' time were so resistant to what God was doing through Him, they gave the Devil credit which is a terrible slander against the Spirit. Can people still committ such a sin? Whachathink? Al

SIN ISSIN, God cares about the caremel candy in your life, God treats stealing the same as homosexuality, sin is sin either way if you commit it youll be punished. we have a tendency to put sin in levels. but sin is all the same, we are all sinners even the littlest things we dont think is sin is sin and he treats it as that.

um.. i have to disagree with you all. I think there are different levals of sin. Murder is worse than stealing a video game. Yes they're both sins, but one is much greater than the other. Can I get an amen on that? Yes, a sin is a sin, but there are different levals..... I'm not sure what the GREATEST sin is though....there are so many very bad sins

Whatever your favorite sin is, that's the greatest sin!

Seriously, there is no point in human beings ranking sins. We don't have the ability to know which ones are worse than others because we can't see all the effects each sin has. Only God can know.

People usually want to rank sins so they can feel like their particular favorite sin isn't so bad compared to all the other bad sins out there.

But really, your personal sina are the only one that matter, because those are the ones that separate you from God, those are the ones you can repent of.

So, don't worry about how your sin ranks with everyone else's. Your sin is bad, so bad that unless you admit you are a sinner who needs a savior, you can't be cleaned of it at all!

Hey lambslove: have to agree with you and I'm the one who raised the issue in the first place. We Americans are forever ranking everything from the best city to live in (Phoenix :) to the most popular pork and beans brand. We poll incessantly even when we're not in the elections battles ( when is that ?). If the greatest command is to love God and our neighbor, let's throw out the polls and rankings and get on with loving God passionately and becoming peacemakers and reconcilers, especially in the Christian community.
If you all don't like my response....you know what? Perhaps I'm mistaken. Al

I can agree with you matrix because SIN IS SIN no matter how bad it is, its sinning in God's eyes we cant put levels on are sins, only God can and he doesnt because he treats them all the same. to us one is greater then the other but to him no, stealing is still the same as murdering, pornogrphy is the same as murder and stealing, your sinning and your not supposed to you cant put a level on it.

All sin is the same in God's sight IMHO, but if I had to put a label on the worst sin in regards to other humans, I would say it would be selfishness because it is so pernicious and so easily infiltrates our lives, it can come in so many forms from simply failing to look out for others to constantly promoting ourselves above everyone else, so many other sins spring from it (i.e. people drive intoxicated, steal, murder, etc because they are unconcerned for the harm their actions will cause to others or for others' property and/or lives), and because in its lesser forms, everyone will commit it at one point or another in their life-and probably not even realize they did.

From reading the scriptures, I believe that the greatest sin is called the sin against the Holy Spirit. This sin appears to be that of refusing God's salvation or God's love either by denying the Holy Spirit in our lives or refusing to let the Holy Spirit direct our lives.

For example, if a person becomes self-centered to the point where he pities himself and finds that he can no longer pray. This is very serious sin. It leads to a downward spiral into the depths of despair. It leads to suicide because the person believes that God no longer loves him or cares. This is a total deception of the devil. (Note: I am not talking about severe mental illness.)

Today we seem to have a lot of problems because many people don't really believe that God loves them.

Psychology can't really help. Drugs only numb the mind so that a person cannot think clearly. Now we are hearing that some drugs cause further depression. So we are becoming a society that wants an easy fix with a pill. However, some mental illnesses are chemical imbalances caused by dietary problems, allergies or chemical imbalances. These have been corrected by modified diets and food supplements.

The cure of the soul, unfortunately, is not done with a pill. It takes a daily struggle. A good pastor is essential because you cannot struggle alone. That is why Christ instituted the Church, which is the body of believers that we call the Mystical Body of Christ.

Any comments?

Hope this helps, but I think it will raise more questions.

Lovingly in Christ,

Elizabeth

Proverbs 6:16 these six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischeif, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
