This appears to be an important book to Adventists. What exactly is it about, and why is it important?

It is actually the fifth book in a series outling the great controversy between Christ and Satan from the before this world was created until the controversy ends and all is restored.

Written by Ellen G White who received revelation from God and was commission to write this down for our benefit. The books follow the story line of the bible and can be read along side the bible.

book 1. Patriachs and Prophets - covers the start of the conflict until the time of king David

Book 2 - Prophet and kings - King Solomon until Christ

Book 3 - Desire of Ages - The life of Christ (in my opinion the most valuable book she wrote)

Book 4 - Acts of the Apostles - The early church and the life of paul

Book 5 - The Great Controversy - Covers the reformation and "what is yet to come" just before the return of Christ as well as the second coming.

that said, the great controversy is a good read, even though i am an SDA.
