  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is some "Common Christian Wisdom" that you've learned isn't true?

I'd like to see more men in kilts...
Um - this is the Wesleyan folder, NOT the Presbyterian/Church of Scotland one .......

But I must say I really do like my wife's clan colors:

Please no, the kilt doesn't do anything for me.

Capes, on the other hand....I really wish men would start wearing those again.

BTW, I'm enjoying the history and culture lessons. History was one of my majors. I've seen many pictures of young boys dressed in dresses with hair uncut. And I have often thought how culture and our own prejudices influences how we think God wants us to dress, act and think.

I really love that perspective. To me that seems like a much more powerful and meaningful way to see the Word of God.

Once upon a time , the Irish had a wonderful drink they called the water of life or ish kay. The Scots came and stole it, (renaming it Whiskey). So the Irish sent along the bagpipes and the kilts.
The Scots still haven't figured out the joke.

1. 1 Timothy 2 :12 partially addresses this, if by speaking in church you mean teaching then yes it is prohibited, at least teaching men.
2. True, and hardly any one claims this one anymore.
3. I have no idea what is meant here.
4. This is true, in fact, read Song of Solomon to see it is permitted, but the key is married.
5. This could go under the 1 Timothy 2:. Makeup isn't prohibited but don't overdo it.
6. The old testament has a prohibition on this but it was not a moral law so it doesn't apply under the new covenant.
7. True.
8. Again technically true, but it may not be being the best steward of your money and if you are addicted it is a problem, ut in itself it is not a sin.
9. Yes, even Jesus drank alcohol, drunkenness is prohibited but there is a difference.
10. Allowing others freedom in this area? Yes.
11. Actually it is prohibited many places, in fact one only needs to point to the First Commandment.
12. The church is for sinners just like the hospital is for the sick, just like Jesus said.

1. This is technically true, the Bible doesn't explicitly support any modern economic system, although how Jesus deals with money is completely compatible with Capitalism.
2. Again true, and it gets annoying when people talk about Jesus being a Communist or socialist, but their reasons are major stretches at best.
3. Where is this even implicitly prohibited? I know the verse people use, but usually they are used out of context.
4. I don't know how you could use the Bible to support this.
5. While we see it a lot in the Old Testament, God makes it clear that his plan was "One man and One woman".
6. See above.
7. This one uses convoluted logic to support it. A lot of atheists especially make this claim.
8. The Bible does talk of slavery, even how to treat slaves. However, the conditions are different from what we historically had as slavery in America. IN fact, the strongest abolitionist were Christians who opposed it for religious reasons.
9. This is an odd one, what do you make of Proverbs 13:24?
10. Again, it uses convoluted logic. Maybe they may even use the invasion of Caanan as support, but misapply it.
11. How do you deal with things like the people lying to the Nazis to protect the Jews? I have figured lying was bad but in such a case not lying would be worse. I saw one argument that said the people could have just not said anything as the Nazis would have checked the house regardless. However, that makes a few assumptions we can's know.
12. He does but don't use Jeremiah 29:11 to support it.
13. Of course not. Everyone has sinned at church at some point most likely, even if only a mental sin.

What you said about "the Lord helps those that help themselves" reminds me of something that some people do that bugs me. I am going to share it if I can explain my thoughts so you understand me.
I know that the Lord wants us to trust Him for our needs but some people take it a little over board and it goes along with this saying. The Lord wants us to trust Him but I don't think He wants us to be stupid. Here is one example.

My parents had a nearly new car back in the 80s and they took it to a guy in the church that had a welding business. They were having him put a hitch on the car. Well the guy's son-in-law was doing the work and hit the gas tank with the welding rod. And the car caught fire and it was totalled. Not much left of it.

Well normally a business would carry insurance incase something like this happened. Well not this business. The owner from our church told my parents he had no insurance because that would not be trusting the Lord to take care of you. So my parents were left holding the bag.

Like I said we should trust the Lord but I believe that the Lord does not ask us to be stupid. The Lord doesn't expect us to just sit back and do nothing and expect the Lord to do everything for you. That is being irresponsible in my opinion.

Well anyway the saying "the Lord helps those that help themselves" made me think of this.

Sorry for your parents - that would be a miserable situation.

This comes down to common sense too - God wants us to act wisely and insure if needed, especially if it's a legal issue (it is here.) There's nothing wrong with preparing in case and protecting your resources or people in your life. I think some people use the insurance as an excuse, too, to be cheap and not having to pay that monthly bill.

Yeah - I remember when that teaching was making its rounds. Eventually we all decided it was bogus and everyone started buying insurance again.

But according to that teaching, the guy (or business) that caused the damage should have paid for either repairs or a new car out of his own pocket.
