My super religious cousin, (who is really a hypocrite that covers up her very unholy past by saying she is a christian) claims that "Secular" music is music that is evil. She claims that if the song doesn't have anything to with god is considered "Secular'. Is this really true? I am curious.

i do not agree with your cousin that all secular music is evil. there are many good secular songs out there that have helped some get through tough times, brought smiles to faces, and are good entertainment.
secular music is non-religious music. it is music you wouldnt hear on christian radio stations or used as worship music in churches.

If your hamburger wasn't prepared by a preacher it isn't a holy hamburger.

Sound ridiculous? The same thing applies to music.

The word 'secular' implies nothing about the moral quality. It simply means it's not talking about religion, the same way playing solitaire has nothing to do with religion. Does that make playing solitaire evil? I think not. There isn't anything special about music that changes this, and more importantly for those that always have to have some sort of Scriptural justification for everything, there is no justification for this sacred/secular dichotomy, or for all the hyperspiritual nonsense certain groups try to attribute to music - it's not Scriptural at all. In fact, it resembles Gnosticism more than orthodox Christianity.

I agree with the Hamburger reference. One of the metal bands I listen to sings a song about overcoming a molestation experience that she had. And you're saying that that song is evil? She basically is saying that she was molested as a child but over the years she has become a stronger woman because of it. Anyone that has been molested in their lives can listen to that song and get extremely inspired. I don't know of any christian songs that have that much meaning to them. I mean I am sure that there are but I have never heard one. In every non "Secular" that I have heard has been about how great the lord is and whatnot.
