  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey there :) I have grown up in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church for most of my life and just so you're certain, the basics between SB and Presbyterian are the same. The Apostle's Creed. The Nicene Creed. We share more than we differ.

But as for differences, here's a big one: Presbyterians sprinkle infants with water (or they will dedicate the infant and not baptise them until they make a statement of faith later in life. essentially the same, but no water involved until the baptism later in life). Baptists use immersion.

I was wondering about Presbyterianism too, the websites I saw didn't really help.
This guy that started talking to me in the library the other day is a Presbyterian.
I belonged to the United Church of Canada and some of it is Presbyterian, Methodist, etc. it's a mix. I left that church because they were too liberal for me.

I am a member of a PCA church. Here is a brief overview of what my church believes:

A Synopsis of the Beliefs of the Presbyterian Church in America
1. The Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

2. There is one God, eternal and self-existing in three persons (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) who are to be equally loved, honored, and adored.

3. All mankind participated in Adam's fall from his original sinless state and is thus lost in sin and totally helpless.

4. The Sovereign God, for no other reason than His own unfathomable love and mercy, has chosen lost sinners from every nation to be redeemed by the quickening power of the Holy Spirit and through the atoning death and resurrection of His son, Jesus Christ.

5. Those sinners whom the Spirit quickens, come to believe in Christ as Savior by the Word of God, are born again, become sons of God, and will persevere to the end.

6. Justification is by faith and through it the undeserving sinner is clothed with the righteousness of Christ.

7. The goal of God's salvation in the life of the Christian is holiness, good works, and service for the glory of God.

8. At death the Christian's soul passes immediately into the presence of God and the unbeliever's soul is eternally separated from God unto condemnation.

9. Baptism is a sign of God's covenant and is properly administered to children of believers in their infancy as well as to those who come as adults to trust in Christ.

10. Jesus Christ will return to earth, visibly and bodily, at a time when He is not expected, to consummate history and the eternal plan of God.

11. The Gospel of God's salvation in Jesus Christ must be published to all the world as a witness before Jesus Christ returns.

Find out if your freind is PCA Presbyterian or PCUSA.....very big difference.....sadly.

Pca is the conservative side, how conservative? Read the confession they are build on and you'll get an idea. I reguarly attend a Pca Church here after coming from a pretty charasmatic non-denom Church, they teach the bible in season and....now...which I would say is out of season, I'm a big fan of that.

PCUSA...I believe they are in the process of ordaining practicing or confessing homosexuals....last I read anyway. Just to give you an idea of just how different the two are.

From the conversations I've had with a Reformed Baptist and a Southern Baptist friend, we are very similar as far as most things go.

Like someone else said, check out "Reformed Theology" and the "Westminster Confession of Faith" to learn what we're all about.

The word 'Presbyterian' means 'elder-led.'

There are less differences in theology from other churches, and more difference in the structure of church authority.

I attend my local Presbyterian church (as well as Catholic) because it has great community involvement regarding charity work, homeless projects, and fundraising events.

The Presbyterian church in Scotland is big, and my parish have some fantastic guest preachers from different towns, backgrounds, denominations - it's always interesting and often inspiring to hear them speak.

Presbyterians are reformed Christians and they are a good denomination. Although there are some that except homosexuals as pastors and they have infant Baptist but most of them do not and are very accurate in their theology.

God bless.

Hmm...which presbyterian church doesn't baptise infants?

And Yeah I would agree that PCA side definatly teaches sound doctrine and accurate theology, I would have to disagree that PC-USA is doing that.

I'm not completely sold on infant baptism, but every Presbyterian church I've seen has done..and I have never seen a verse that would flat out contradict it.

I wasn't either, then I learned that it's a "convenetal" thing, not a "salvation" thing.

As in they treat their children as children of the promise until the children themselves show otherwise.
