You bet! If you're the kind of people who enjoy watching teenage boys throw golf balls from the roof at passing cars, or if you like having drug-addict neighbors, OR if you like living next to the guy that set his own home on fire with his kids inside, then there's 'bout five or six houses in our old 'hood that're for sale. ;)

Yep...the echidna must be related to the hedgehog somewhere along the line!
But, I do love our birdlife too. The big white sulphur crested cockatoo's are soooo funny. On the farm they mimic ther farmhands & yell out "Shut the flamin' gate too!!" So, nobody forget to close a gate....
The crimson rosella's, mopokes, kookaburras, galahs, they are all so beautiful.

Well...I just call them porcupines. They've got long bristles, and a long snout and eat ants. Wish they'd clean the white ants up though...there are little black ones that will do that if you kill a few & let them find them. They bite the white ant's head off & cart the rest to their little nests. But, white ants in Oz are no attraction!!!
It's gotta just be Oz? Whattayareckon?

*cough* Ahem... Hedgehogs are mammals related to moles and shrews... Porcupines are also mammals related to rats and rodents. Echidnas are a differnt thing altogether. Oh... echidnas lay eggs, if that makes any difference.

Isn't it also partly the whole 'Crikey, look at that, it's HUGE...' Steve Irwin thing, too?? Those kind of things like 'That's not a knife...' and all the other stuff that we, as Australians, cringe about when we're told the world is eating it up...

I still have relatives in the UK that believe Australia is full of Kangaroos hopping down the street, and that 'The Castle' and/or 'Crocodile Dundee' is representative of how we all live...

Anyway, my real point for this - I wonder how much has been made of the Steve Irwin thing overseas... it's been a major news item in South Australia, but then we figure it's probably just to distract the media/public attention from something else...

Peace be with you...
Stuart

I think Steve's run his course in Vic Stuart. I reckon he's a bit of a showoff at any time but, security would have been watching the baby. But, I do not condone what he did with his child. It was sheer lunacy and he deserves to be chastised. That was the most UNAUSTRALIAN thing I have ever seen. Had he been my hubby he'd have had his crocs taken off him and been made to play with play dough.
Ah! Where I live, Croc Dundee would be right at home. And, we'd have been right at home with him. He'd have fitted in at the local barbie in the shearing shed! And...we'd have shown him a bigger knife than his! Croc Dundee's character isn't fiction. Believe me...I know many Croc Dundee's!! You oughta see them play footie!! They're tougher than Croc Dundee! He's a [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] to some of them around here!
I say 'The Castle' suits us here admirably. We'd all do the same as they. Fight for our rights and take it as high as possible to preserve our rights.

Hey Droobie! My porcupines lay eggs too! So...I'll call them what I always call them...porcupines....whatdyareckon?

Hey Droobie! My porcupines lay eggs too!

Yeah yeah yeah - marsupials have pouches. Marsupials include opossums and hedgehogs. Maybe they're not exactly related to echidnas - but they're still marsupials!
Neat about the eggs, huh? I could say some things about all the wacko critters ending up down under, but I'll be a nice girl for a bit :)

The platypus is a beautiful, and strange creature. It's so cute. Just to sit by a billabong and watch them is so relaxing. I've done that heaps of times, but, they don't live around here. I used to watch them at play in the water as a kid. My friend has a pet emu, Barry. He is so gorgeous. He walks beside us over the paddocks like a big birdie dog!!

That is so amazing! Platypuses prove to me that God has a great sense of humor!

Hmmm, I'm trying to think of some truly odd American species. Porcupines and opossums are high up there on the list. Moles are a bit funky - so adorable, though. My cat when she was a kitten found a baby mole in the yard one summer day and was batting it around like a little pussywillow. I saved it. And bats, of course! Always unique.

Australia has a really large selection of unusual animalia, that is for sure! Africa has quite a few interesting species as well. Well, probably most continents do EXCEPT for huge chunks of North America. Figures.
