  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I guess a good start would be...

With regard to characteristics, Love is the following --
(see 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a)

- Patient
- Kind
- Not envious/jealous
- Not vain
- Not puffed up
- Does not behave indecently
- Is selfless, not pursuing its own things
- Not easily angered
- Forgives (thinks no evil)
- Rejoices in the good and true
- Covers over wrongs
- Believes/Trusts
- Hopes & Endures
- Does not fail!

:)

Thats a tall order and totally opposite of what the world defines as Love.
I think you're very correct.

More secular (perhaps America's) definition:

- Meets my needs
- Relieves tension
- Similarity between two people (or perhaps compatibility)
- Having sex
- Liking to a high degree
- Happy feelings
- Taking an edge off of the harshness of life

I think there's a tiny bit of overlap, though the mature feelings within actual love go against the self-serving nature of love in America today.

All love is conditional. The only person capable of unconditional love is God, and none of us are he.

Love is not a feeling, but a [SIZE=-1]steady wish for the loved person's ultimate good as far as it can be obtained. (C.S. Lewis)

Oh, and... "Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more." (Obligatory)

I wrote a poem once on the subject..

Love is a sickness within us all
It is like a terminal disease..
It is Incurable..
Takes the timid heart hostage..
Plagues the mind..
Deepest the timid soul..

Love can either protect you or harm you..
Like a two-edged sword..
Love is a powerful experience..
Love is a chain reaction that cannot be controlled..
Simply by human nature..
Beware from its tempting lusts into sin..
Until you are wedded..
Stray your lurking eye until your wedding day..
Without love we are not human..
Everyone deserves to be loved..
It was always God’s intention in His grand design..
Be blessed fellow traveler and rejoice in the Lord..

Haha, I thought of that song too! :D

"Love is not a feeling" - I believe that describes it best. Like you said, it's putting the happiness and good of someone else before yourself in all situations.

I "love" Corinthians. :) I think it explains it best!

Some people lose all rational thinking and logic on account of love... I myself have too but I have gotten a lot better with it since I've got a little older. I am definitely glad that I am over that stage where I let a woman's sheer beauty destroy me.

CS Lewis stated it third best. Corinthians stated it second best. Christ stated it first best by laying down his life for people who hated him, people who he didnt even know yet, just to save them.

I dont think people are capable of unconditional love until they have a child. You love them even though they may annoy the heck out of you or do things against your will.

Love, in my definition, will do anything for the other person's happiness... even if it means giving that other person upso they can be happier. It doesnt care about itself, but the other person involved. It doesnt see how it benefits itself, but rather how the other person is benefitted by it.
