  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I've posted this question at TAW also, but I also want your opinion/advice.

So, what exactly is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? Isn't it true that Jesus Christ said it was an unforgivable sin? I thought all sins were forgivable...help me! I'm so confused!

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, may God bless you for helping me!:crossrc:

first let me congratule you for winning the record for the largest signature I've ever seen :)

It is important to remember any any sin can be forgiven by Sacramental Confession. Any sin.
The unforgivable sin, is to die rejecting Gods Love.

Is that Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? The thing is, I'm reading along in my Bible and then all of a sudden Jesus says "if a man blasphemes against the Son of God, then he will be forgiven, but if a man blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, he will never be forgiven." Help please! I'm so confused.:(

God is Word, God is Spirit.
A blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is everything is against the Word of God.
All that is against the Church is a blasphemy against the Word of God, this is the reason that S.Paul is inferior to other eleven Apostles.
I think that who doesn't believe offends the Word of God also, see S.Thomas epysode.
S.Pieter epysode is not a blasphemy against the Word of God.

To expand a little on geocajun's awesome response, I was always told that if you had full knowledge of God's existance/love and yet denied Him outright and never repented, that is the unforgivable sin.

geo's makes a little more sense, but they are both along the same lines.

Ave Maria!

How refreshing to see consistency. Over at Christianity.com, someone posted the same question. You will be amazed at how many varriant answers were given. Each person has their own unique theories regarding this question. Luther's worst fear demonstrated; a world of popes. lol.

Esran,
I can truthfully tell you that if you have sought to answer this question then you have not blasphemed against the Holy Spirit or God for that matter....

What I was told, and it is the truth, is that one who blasphemes against God knowingly does so and has no need to even ask the question... Otherwise it is not Blasphemy. One must know what Blasphemy is in order to be able to do it in the first place. As was mentioned this would require complete and accurate knowledge....

It rejection of the gift of the Holy Spirit that lives in you unto death.

You are baptized right? The Holy Sprint comes to live in you and restore you to a state of grace but you sin and you lack contrition for those sins unto death- you don’t ask for mercy and you don’t want mercy. That is blaspheming the Holy Sprit who lives in you. You’re telling him to take a hike.

Huh?

I hope you are not meaning blaspheming the bible is blaspheming the Holy Spirit? Not making the bible your authority is rejecting the Holy Spirit?

I am because the Bible is the Word of God.

it isn't because Jesus says in John 12, 47..48:
"If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day".

No. Blasphemy is exclusive only to the Holy Spirit. Not Jesus. Not the Bible. Not anything else (see passage below)
.
"Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him. But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the one to come." [Matt 12:32]

Well, has the Church made any declaration regarding this verse? (That's what it should all come down to)
Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit

"....There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. 137 Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss. [CCC, 1864]
