Our next "what is it" was hunted to extinction, but is being recreated through selective breeding. They're getting close--we may yet see them again our lifetimes. Last pic shows the progress they're making on bringing this animal back.

I figure they'll have them back before too long. They were basically a particular color phase of a species of zebra which still exists.
