I have read it, and I know what you're going to say...

48where
" 'their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched.'

I believe this to be poetic language for how repulsive death will be for the unrighteous. Being eaten by worms, and burned by a fire.

In any case, the passage is describing the worms as eternal, and the fire as unquenchable.

Again, nothing to suggest that the unrighteous will exist eternally amongst the worms and the fire.

I have two questions for people who believe that hell will be living in hot fires and torture eternally:

Question number 1) What do you feel Matthew 10:28 means? Specifically the 'destruction of both soul and body' part.(Passage is below)

"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell."

Question number 2) We know that Jesus will be judging us (john 5:22) and either bringing us to Paradise or 'Hell'. If hell is a place of pain and torture, do you think it is characteristic of Jesus to send anyone to such a place?

(you can probably guess my answer to Q 2 ;) )
um,Jesus died for our sins. He sends people to hell if your not saved plan and simple, there is no going around it. Ignore it all you want it is real. The Bible speaks of hell.

I know he died for our sin. I know he sends people to hell. I know the bible speaks of hell. You are clearly not listening to me. The bibles speaks of hell, but does NOT, i repeat, does NOT say, you will be suffering in hell forever.

Umm... that only goes to strengthen my arguement. Ok, I agree, he will punish people by not letting them into Heaven. Read passage 9. It says nothing about being tortured eternally!

2 Thessalonians 7:9They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power

It does however say exactly what I've been saying since the beginning of this thread. I believe your soul will be destroyed. So there's this passage, and also Matthew 10:28 that talks about destruction of the soul in Hell, and I STILL haven't seen any scripture that says 'you will be in torturous pain eternally'....

am I wrong?

Well I think people's soul doesn't get destroyed in hell like what Pseud said. Some people have the idea of that soul gets oblitirated in hell because they don't want to face the reality of eternal suffering. I have an example: If you are physically totured in life wouldn't you rather die than continuing being tortured so that you can get relief from the torture. Same goes here if you soul gets destroyed, that is not eternal punishment because well your soul gets destroyed and you punishment is finished. If your soul is destroyed in hell it would be the same as being dead after a torture. It is a relief than a punishment. If I was in hell I would rather get my soul destroyed rather than face the torture of hell. Oh yeah and when Pseud earlier said something about Lazarus. Well the person who said "Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame". was the rich man not Lazarus, it says it "have mercy on me, and send Lazarus. And for the answer to you 2nd question is that we are given free will we have the ability to choose between God and the devil and whoever is not saved made the choice to go to hell even though they don't want to. People who go to hell made the choice no to believe in Jesus so they end up in hell. There's going to be consequences for your choices. And the consequences for no chosing to believe in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour is eternal punishment in hell. I think that that Matthew passage talks about God's power and that He have the ability to destroy your whole existence including your soul in a snap of a finger. Read Matthew 10:27-31, then you will be able to see that Jesus was talking about the Power Of God. Thanks for reading :) :) :) :)
