also on another hand you say we fork out near $180 to play these games, but in my life most of my free time is spent playing games as a hobby, other people go see movies, go out to eat, play paintball, what have you, add those totals up for a year and i bet you they will have paid more for their hobbies than i have, just my $.02
Agreed

This is our hobby that we spend money on to get away from life for a while. Much like someone might spend $400 on those special cards for games like Magic the Gathering or Warhammer. Or maybe they spend $2000 getting a new rear wing for their car. Some of us play games, some of us build cars. :)

You look at it from the one sided view. You have to remember something about MMORPGs... just buying the game ain't going to pay the bills.

When you run something like an MMORPG, it costs a LOT of money. Not just to create the game and distribute it, but also there are server costs, bandwith costs, support costs, employee wages, dev costs so they can make new things in the game and keep it changing... it's not a one time thing that says "ok, I paid my $39 for a brand new game (mind you, I waited 3 months before I bought Age of Shadows for UO and paid $10 for it), that should be all I need to pay." No, because their bills to keep the game running are in the tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars every month to run. So think about this. If you didn't pay that monthly fee, you would have no support, no servers to play on, no new things in game, no servers to hold the game on...

It's this simple, if you don't feel you should pay a monthly fee to help keep the game running, then by all means, continue to play your single player games. When you buy the game in the store, the only thing you pay for is the development and distribution of the game itself. The monthly fee helps pay for the services that keep the game running. However, there are a few game companies that are beginning to let people download the game for free (like UO/Lineage now are doing), and then just pay the monthly fee. But don't expect a brand new game like WoW to be free. They have spent years developing it and it's cost them probably in the millions just to finish the game itself...

I, myself, am waiting for the new game based on Raymond E. Feist's books. ;)

Listen I am not here to debate the games. I said why I do not like them is because if I want to play a game I do not like paying a subscription fee. I realize it takes more investment than just the game hence my opinion.

I know there fun games and I realize there your hobbies and it does not bother you guys to pay for the subscriptions. I simply stated why I do not like them and the cost was the reason I do not feel it is justified.

I love going out to the movies it cost $30.00 for two where I live if I want friends to come along that total is going to be higher. My brother does not like going to the movies he feels why go to the movies when you can by a DVD and own it. I respect that opinion even though I do not agree with it.

See my response above to terrapin. I am not here to debate the games, as it is just my opinion answered honestly to the question a fair answer to a fair question. Again i am not putting down anybodys hobbies it is just why I do not play the games. I have played all the Final Fantasy games except one coming out here pretty quickly I will be missing out on a fantastic game I am sure.

o, and btw. they upkeep costs, aren't that much.

they could run them off of $6 a month. but its easy money. and people are willing to pay it.
That depends on the game. Look at Ultima Online for instance. The game has over 20 servers running on t1 - t3 lines which cost a pretty penny a month just to have. Then you have bandwith costs for each of the 300,000 people who have running accounts. The price gets way up there just for bandwith...

Not saying that EA doesn't make a killing on the game. It's their #1 money maker and I hardly doubt that their pockets are thin. In any business, you are out to make money, there are just several costs that are completely overlooked when doing something like that. If anything, they probably only get $2/mo over budget from each player due to costs. But $2/mo x 500,000 x 12 = $12,000,000/year in pocket change. But the thing is, a lot of that money goes back into the company to develop new games... so it's a circle pattern that keeps them rich and making good quality games.

lol, i know my addictive personality and so avoided MMORPG's until a group of friends at work got into DAOC a month or so after it came out. a year or so later i gave my accts (yep, had two i was playing simultaneously) to some friends in my guild and haven't looked back (much). might try WoW when it comes out but the same thing applies, there's so much real life to experience that i can't see getting sucked into a fake life for so long and paying money to do it. i do miss the folks i met ingame though.

I am an EQ ex-junkie.
I play on Bristlebane, got a 31 Pally, 23 Monk, 12 Bard. I have been playing since November 2003.
Unfortuantely due to my time being taken up promoting my clubnight I have been unable to play properly for a good few weeks, and when I do get chance to play I get serious LagMonkey effect and I get miffed and then I go LD. so at the moment EQ is not my favourite thing in the world. I am very controlled in my language but I swear at EQ way to much! Ooops.
I am sure God will forgive me as swearing at inanimate objects doesn't really count!
I wonder if calling my dog names counts either, I'll have to pray about that!!!

Peace.

I'm inclined to think that it's a sign of apostasy that so many people are spending time in MMORPGs that could be better spent in other, more edifying pursuits. I've watched a few friends play Everquest and I wouldn't touch it with a 39-and-a-half foot pole!

Thats a pretty long and accurately measured barge pole, you definitely would get near it if you touched it with that!

I use EQ a pursuit of relaxation rather than and method of wasting away time:angel: honest!

It is great let your mind wander through Norrath every now and again, but it can be sooo addictive, and I have to admit I was for a month, as I had to get my EQ fix. now I am more miffed off with EQ because of crashing problems and pop on once a week.

So don't ya worry about me, I have that area of my life back under control;) .

Now I just gotta sort out my addiction to volunteering for everything going, addiction for driving too fast and addiction to staying out late flyering and postering (not really an addiction but something I would like to cut down on!) and my life we be more sorted!

yep EQ CAN be a waste of time, but so can TV and movies etc etc, i know in my personal life i use it as entertainment, i used to be addicted to it for a long time, but then i quit for a while, now im back playing but i have specific rules about it set, i never turn downa social event for EQ etc, i find the game fun and challenging and once it loses the fun it will be gone, but its tons of fun atm, 1 kill away from time access :D
