Empathy is literally the ability to feel someone's pain. Ever cried during a sad movie? Ever walked into a room where everyone is laughing and started laughing yourself for no apparent reason? It is an incredibly important emotion necessary to maintain the social bonds between humans (and even between humans and other life forms).

I think empathy is a genetic, complex evolved trait. Some have it more than others. Autistic people may not have it at all.

If you spend time really considering the importance of empathy you would realize that God is not love, God is empathy.

I'll have to get my "Emotional Intelligence" book out by Daniel Goleman.

The above defintion is correct, but also, according to this author's definition of "empathy" or having and feeling empathy for others, empathy is a sign of high emotional intelligence in people...
being able to share in others feelings also shows that that person is capable of loving and caring for his or herself...It also goes hand in hand with Jesus' commandments to "love your neighbor as yourself".....Empathy is that love and compassion for others, and being able to share and feel with the other person's feelings, and share with their perspective.

Emotional Intelligence has a few more attributes about it, and another is self-awareness...With empathy we can have a more accurare picture of the word around us, because of the healthier quality of life true empathy gives to us..... :D
