Every believer experiences being baptized with the Spirit exactly once. The wording "baptized with the Holy Spirit" was not common in the NT. John the Baptizer first mentioned it in Matthew 3:

11 “I baptize [G907] you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize [G907] you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
John introduced the concept with expectations. The imagery was that the baptized were fully immersed, not in water but in the Holy Spirit, as a spiritual reality. Specifically, he prophesied the Pentecost event after Jesus' resurrection.

Jesus concurred and announced the first appearance of this being baptized with the Spirit in Acts 1:

5 "For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized [G907] with the Holy Spirit.”
It happened in the chapter 2:

1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
In its inaugural appearance, the event of being baptized with the Holy Spirit came with visual power (fire).

4 All of them were filled [G4130] with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
When it was announced, the word G907-baptize was used. But when it happened, the word G4130-fill was used. Being baptized with the Spirit required the filling of the Spirit. Before Jesus died on the dross, people were filled but were never baptized in the Spirit.

  1. The Spirit fell on them.
  2. Being filled, the Spirit was in them
  3. Being born again, the Spirit dwells within their human spirits.
Another incident of being baptized with the Spirit occurred when Peter was at Cornelius’ house in Joppa. Acts 10:

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell [G1968] on all who heard the message.
Here, the verb was fell and not filled. The Spirit fell on them; they were filled and born again.

45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles.
No fire this time but they spoke in tongues.

46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God.
In the next chapter, Peter reported to the Jerusalem church about this event in 11:

15 "As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning.
The Gentiles

16 I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized [G907] with the Holy Spirit.’
Peter confirmed that it was the phenomenon of being baptized with the Spirit.

A dozen years later, Paul wrote generally in 1 Corinthians 12:

13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
Everyone in the Body of Christ is connected to the Holy Spirit by a Spirit tentacle through the event of being baptized with the Spirit.

Being baptized with the Spirit is a three-quick-step event in which the Spirit engulfs a person, then gets inside him, and finally takes up residence in the innermost part of his being, his human spirit. It is a real event happening in the transcendent reality.

Note that I have carefully avoided the terms "baptism of the Spirit" and "baptized by the Spirit".

When I became born again, Scripture came alive to me and I read Scripture for hours daily and knew I was saved.
I have never experienced what is referred to as the Baptism of the Holy Ghost, at least not as I understand it to be by what others have shared with me.

Paul writes in Acts 19 verse 2:

"He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost."

Then he proceeds to baptize them in water.

I am torn about a separate event due to much teaching throughout the church that the indwelling recieved at salvation, which I had recieved, is that very thing.
They seemed to be in the same position as myself, yet when he baptized them in water, as was I a few months later verse 6 reads:

"And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied."

I have read much about this since I was saved and there are strong arguments on both sides of what seems to be a deep division in the Body of Christ.
I have also had many Christians describe their experiences similar to what occurred to these 12.

My question is, if I already have that indwelling, as a large percent of believers have told me, why didn't what happened in verse 6 occure in me?

Would Paul have baptized the unsaved?

Good question.

Pentecostals view baptism of the Spirit as a distinct experience after conversion, marked by speaking in tongues, to empower them for service and witness. I have not experienced this kind of baptism of the Spirit. I don't feel that I have to either.

Would Paul have baptized the unsaved?
No.

No.
Nor had those Paul baptized in water, yet we agree they were saved.
How do you and I differ from these 12.

In my 30s I believed Jesus but in my 50s I called on the Lord for my alcoholism and was delivered Praise God! During that time something came over me and I had this unconditional love, even to my co-workers and it lasted a couple of months then went away. I considered this to be baptized in the Holy Spirit that I've heard others talk about. But I don't know but it was weird.

My oppologies, Tony.
I checked my text in my first post and discovered that I had provided the verse but forgot to give the chapter in Acts.
