Generally the staunch literalists/creationists are seen as the Extremists of Christianity. As to their crime against humanity - the spreading of willful ignorance, hatred, and hypocrisy seem to be the worst. Although, Christians had their days of violent destruction in the past.

I guess Paul and the other apostles who were also literalists too were also too Extreme right? What about Jesus he was also a literalists of the scripture (Mark 14:49), as he was fulfilling the scripture. Not to mention Jesus (Mark 13:19) and the apostles (Colossians 1:16) were all creationists as they believed God created everything. So are you really saying that God was also an Extremists? If so then all chriatians are Extremists! God Bless

those who oppose queer people

Those who hate homosexual people I agree that they are not living a life that is Christ-like. But it is Christ-like to oppose the sin of homosexuality (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Romans 1:24-27,Jude 1:7) that is ruining peoples intament relationship with God by going against God's design for a healthy relationship between the opposite sex. God Bless

Anyone who traps God in a narrow box and believes in the following mantra "I believe it, God says it, and that settles it"

There is nothing wrong with the following mantra " God say's it, I believe it, and that settles it."

If you believe that someone who follows the bible is too Extreme because they are putting God in a box, you have to realize that God does not contradict himself or his written word. If God say's it that should settle it, unless you believe that your feeling's are more powerful then God. Then it would be you putting God in your own little box trapped if your feelings instead of God leading you, you are trying to lead God based on how you feel (Isaiah 29:16). The bible is God's word to man on basic and fundamental truths that all men should embrace and it is free from error for it was divinely written and inspired (2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Timothy 4:2). God Bless

Hmmm...allow me to paraphrase statements I've heard in real life over the years from Christians.

  • "Dancing is sinful. God says it, I believe it, and that settles it."
  • "All music that is non-classical -- including so-called 'Christian Contemporary Music' -- is a tool of the devil. God says it, I believe it, and that settles it."
  • "Interracial marriage is a sin. God says it, I believe it, and that settles it."
I could mention many, many more, but these are the silliest. The refusal to allow any doubt, let alone any thought past "God says it, I believe it, and that settles it" allows a lot of extreme nonsense to get by scot-free.

At the conservative Christian college I went to, we joked that premarital sex was a sin because it may lead to dancing ;)

I'm not so sure. Jesus took a lot of liberty with the law, doing things like collecting food on the sabbath. He even changed the meaning of major feast days like passover. You know,"this is my body, do this in remembrance of me" He changed the commandments to "love one another" ect...

God Bless you too! :)

Depends on what you mean by Extreme?

I tell you know, I'd lay down my life for my faith, id die rather than refute it, its the thing that saved me and to die in the faith is better than to live without Faith or even having the faith but compromising it to live is wrong, its better to die.

If that makes me an extremist, i gladly accept the label.

Jesus and the Apostles weren't literalists. And they weren't creationists. Believing God is the Creator does not make one a creationist. Jesus did not believe the Earth is only 6,000 years old.

Homosexuality is not a sin, contrary to the popular lies that are spread about it. Homosexuality also doesn't ruin anyone's lives in the sense you're referring to.

The "Christian" right in general seems to be continually moving to more extremism. Book burnings in Wisconsin, the anti Islam hate (I've heard more than one say all Muslims should be killed), the anti immigrant stance in which some have turned to advocating violence against Mexicans. The list could go on. The more the republican party associates itself with Christianity the more extremist Christianity seems to become.

As for Jesus and the apostles, clearly they were not literalists in their interpretation of the laws and traditions of the Jewish faith.
