Ok, so I published my first book through Amazon and I've had some interesting feedback from some honest people I know. They liked it, overall.
But one piece of feedback I received puzzled me and I wasn't expecting it to be so puzzling.
"I thoroughly enjoy your writing style."

What's a writing style?
It may seem like a basic question, but I haven't really pinpointed my writing style.
I asked her about that and she said my writing style is very descriptive and she feels like she's in the scene.
Okay. But I still don't get how I did that.
I'm not new to writing in general, but I'm new to fiction. And I'm starting to figure it out. My signature has a link to my blog if you'd like to join me in figuring out what the heck I'm doing and want to know how God got me there in the first place.
In the meantime, what's YOUR writing style?

Every writer has their own style of writing. There are writers that write dialogues and does not give a lot of information or description but how they write the dialogue gives way to what is going on. Then their are others that write description and little dialogue but they get to the point with their description. There are other styles of writing but those are the ones I've seen the most from Fictionpress and Wattpad. Also I'm a writer also and mainly my style of writing is description with some dialogue but I've been experimenting with my style by trying different point of views. Most of my time my style is the third person point of view which gives me the opportunity to write more description and less dialogue. This is my best view of how to describe writing style but there are others that can describe is better than me.

My thinking on writing styles. It's a distinctive, or characteristic manner in which we set ideas down on paper. Although I do not consider myself to be a writer, my style is to free-write. I write on topics that spontaneously come to mind, never worry about whether the idea is good, or my spelling correct.

Another style is focused free-writing. Start with a word, a phrase, or sentence. Then freely write your thought where-ever they may take you, concerning that particular word, phrase, or sentence.

Many write as if they are chatting with someone. “He said, she said!”

I would begin by talking to people; and ask questions on a particular subject. After you gather your information, list what-ever you know, or whatever you have learned from others; generate new thoughts around that info; analyze it; then group your thoughs.

There is the mapping, or clustering method. Say the subject is about the history of movies. I would begin by putting the word movies in the center of a large sheet of paper. Then draw a lines out from it, to another circle, and write, "Silent movies; then another line to a circle and write in the circle, black and white movies; another, directors, another to male film stars, another to female stars, etc. When finished, then pick the particular subjects you may want to focus on.

These are my thoughts on the subject.

Writing style can mean a number of things, but it basically boils down to your approach on telling the story. As a previous commenter stated it includes whether you are more descriptive in your narrative in contrast to being descriptive in your dialogue pertaining to the events in the story. Also, your writing style can include your pacing, the point of view from which the story is written, and many other things.

This site is a fun one. You post a piece of your writing and it analyzes it and compares it to the styles of writers and pinpoints which style is most like yours.
