  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What if?

This has nothing to do with Saddam at all. Lets say Saddam was dead. Does that mean we have won the war? Are the Iraqi people going to roll over and play dead if Saddam is dead? Or will they just keep right on fighting against the Americans?

Where are you getting stories that the Iraqi people en masse are fighting us?  They aren't.  The Fedayeen Saddam is fighting in civilian clothing and kidnapping children to force men to fight, but by no means is the general populace taking up arms against the coalition forces.

What I see happening if the people found out Saddam was dead is that you would see revolts breaking out all over, especially in places like Basrah, the Shia areas.

Bingo.

I'd like to jump in and also say that this is a great thread!!

I would answer with a preface that what I say is based on how my life is at the moment. I work, I play, I worship God, ride my Harley all without fear of my government or political leaders. So I would without a question do whatever I needed to do to protect my family and myself. As a civilian, I realize that I do not have the protection of the Geneva Convention, so I would not feel inclined to follow any rules of war. I would do whatever I had to. But if things were different, if I lived under oppression like the iraqis, I'm sure I would think differently.

Some of the American soldiers feel that way about the Iraq army. They don't have much training. They have very little in the way of weapons, just a rifle and some ammo. So they are going to do what they have to do.

An American soldier can shoot all the bullets they want, and the army will give them more. But in a third world nation, often they want to make a bullet count. For one thing, they have value on the Black Market and can be sold for money.

At least that is a problem in the Philippines, where it has been reported that ammo that has been issued, if at the end of the day if they did not use it, they would sell it on the black market.
