Some time ago there had been a thread started on what we learned during the sunday service...I thought I'd try and revive that.

I go to two services on Sunday. One is for the adult bible study and the second is the regular sunday service.

So, for the adult bible study. We were first taken to Proverbs 29:25
25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare,

but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.

The idea, of course, is to point out to us how much we fear each other. This can be shown by how we try to meet other's expectations like our parents or friends; being nervous when speaking to a crowd, etc. Something I hadn't really thought of, but makes sense now that I think of it. I'm not usually intimidated by people, I don't have the need to meet other people's expectations...but for some reason, when I go up to talk, I do get nervous.

We visited other verses like Gen 3:6-10. Here, we looked at when we first had fear of each other...which was right after Adam and Eve took the apple. Adam and Eve hid their bodies from each other and hid from God. We also recounted the story for Dinah and Tamar and how they were given shame by someone else because they had been defiled. We considered the spies that went into the promise land and how they had been frightened of the people there instead of relying on God. How Peter denied knowing Jesus three times.

An interesting comment had been made: "I stopped listening to what other people had to say about me when I realized that they were only speaking from their perspective instead of knowing all of me". In doing so, he does not get wrapped up in what other people say and therefore they cannot drag him down and away from God.

For the regular service, the pastor discussed discipline. I won't drag you through all the verses, I'll just hit on some highlights. He discussed how only christians are disciplined (Heb 12:8) and that if we aren't being disciplined, then something's wrong and we should be worried! He explained that it was for our own good because God does love us and that he wouldn't discipline us out of hatred (PS 89:30-34). Although the discipline might be painful, it is meant to be productive as well in the sense that it will bring us back on the path of righteousness. He explained how we should respond to God's discipline: Understanding, submission and to be trained by his discipline.

So, what did you learn this Sunday?

What did I learn this Sunday?

I missed the morning service (broken tailbone). And I preached the evening service. Now some might think that since I preached in the evening I didn't learn anything... I rather taught something. But while it is true that I taught something it is also very true that I learned somethings.

The sermon was "Abiding in the hands of God" and came from John 10. Jesus teaches us that we are in His hands (and the Father's hands.. they are ONE). There were so many things I learned studying and preaching this message. However I only focused on three aspects of abiding in the hands of God
1. Protection in the hands of God
2. Permissiveness of the hands of God
3. Permanance of abiding in the hands of God

During the sermon we went all over the place.. John, Job, Leviticus, Genesis, Hebrews..

I learned a lot that night.
