  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

What hooks you? What DOESN'T?

I hated it. :p

And All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy, and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad....basically all the books my English teacher has made us read this year. :p

Funny, but I loved The Scarlet Letter.

Oh my gosh YES! I don't know why everyone says Jane Eyre is brilliant because my dog is smarter than that book! And my dog thinks pregnant ladies are the epitome of evil! We tell him that there's kitties outside and he'll start barking!

Jane Eyre is stupid.

I have a feeling once you take some higher level literature courses you will change your mind. This is coming from a male, by the way. It's too rich in symbolism and to deep in context to be "stupid". I am hooked by great narration, that even interacts with the reader in some manner. Think Vonnegut, Palahniuk, etc.

Settings can get me. I like Period pieces and Southern Settings or Old fashined Western Drama. Good Characters (plural) but I hate wordy descriptions (Hemmingway). Give me In Cold Blood, Fried Green Tomatoes, and of course Gone With The Wind.

I like Rick Bragg--(Ava's Man), and I used to love Lewis Grizzard's cacthy titles.

Ooh, Vonnegut...Slaughterhouse Five is insane. I'm not even sure whether I liked it, but the complexities were amazing.

Eh, some people love it, some hate it. Most of my friends hated The Scarlet Letter, for example, but I loved it. Different tastes, I guess.

He's a brilliant author. I would suggest reading A Man Without a Country or The Cat's Cradle. They are also both brilliant. Actually, I've read nearly all of his work and I haven't disliked anything... so pretty much all of it is a safe bet.

Sure, but to call it "stupid" is a different matter entirely. Out of curiosity, why did you not like the book? I'm not a huge fan of Hawthorne although I enjoyed The Scarlet Letter... I'm just not hooked by the Romantics in general. I like short, terse prose better.

The first ten chapters were the interesting part, and after that it was all downhill. The story itself wasn't bad; it's actually a pretty good story. But the telling is what got to me--Bronte seemed to love stretching the boring parts to interminable legnth. I found I could get away with just skimming the chapters and I didn't miss anything important.
