• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I suffer from pure-O thoughts. Right now, they have focused on a suicide obsession, which is really annoying and it disturbs me more than any other thought. But I try to remember that it's just OCD and to trust myself; OCD is just hard because you question your true self.

So, what helped you lessen your obsessive thoughts?

I don't know who this question is specifically addressed to but hopefully my answer will help you out. Basically, I realized that accepting the impulses (the obsessive thoughts) rather than pushing them away (giving in to the compulsions) is the first step towards recovery. There are many additional techniques I use, one of my favourites being singing a melody or tune about the specific obsessive thought to myself in my head. This tells my brain that I'm not afraid or disturbed by the thought, and thus reduces the paradoxcial effect of the obsessions and compulsions. Also, repeating the disturbing thought to yourself is another way.

Prayer first of all. God can help you way more than anything else. Also, something that has worked for me is to take fish oil and vitamins, specifically b vitamins and a multivitamin. The one bad thing to do is to fight the thoughts, because that almost always makes it worse, or at least that has been my experience.
