What happens when we die?
The curtain comes down and your life is over. We lose consciousness when we sleep, when we're knocked out... at any other time out brains are turned off. Religionists want us to believe that consciousness goes on after our brains are turned off by death. Twenty years after death we'll still be conscious, able to greet those loved ones of ours who follow us into death later. Yet, this makes no sense. For instance, our consciousness didn't precede us into this life now did it? You don't remember 20 years before you were born do you? Everything is consistent with our consciousness being dependent upon our biologic functions to exist.

The afterlife is a lie. We live, we die and that's it.

What happens when you die, is that everything that was once 'you' gets reduced to a few dozen pounds of ape meat going bad. But its still nice to know that a good life will be well remembered -even if you yourself don't even exist anymore.

What happens when we die? It is going to happen to me and it will happen to you someday. Scarry. What do you think will happen to you when the times comes?

When we go to heaven what age will we be?
will we be the same age as when we died? or will we be 25 or younger?
only it won't be fair if we die at 95 and someone else dies at 25 and what about children who died?

I am really worried about this, because it's important, we will be spending eternity at that age,
so we should know before we go, because I might not want to go, and how about handicaps,
what if we lose a leg or something will we get it back? or an eye?
these are important questions, will my section be all white or all black?
I'm not very good looking, will we all look the same?
will my mother and father still be my mother and father?
will we all speak the same language? and which language will it be?
Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken, will it be Chinese?
and what if we don't like it there? can we decide to leave?
there are so many questions unanswered,
what if they put me in with the Man Utd fans, or the Yanks?

It's all too much for me, I don't think I'll bother.

What if you became widowed at 25, remarried at, 40, and then both died. What happens then.

The only solution is the "rain drop in the ocean" effect.

This, I admit, is true. Though there is nothing at all to indicate that anything more happens that we may perceive in any way once our physical brains no longer function.

This question is pretty philosophical for the crevo forum.... But I'm not going to side with the people who say we rot in the ground (or become ash, or whatever you choose to do to your body on death) and that's it. While I feel it's probably a very strong possibility, I can't really deny to myself that I also entertain the possibility that there is more to conciousness than meets the eye.

Perhaps, as I continue through school (since consiousness is now my field of study), I will change my mind about it. The fact of the matter is, though, that no way that you look at the Universe can you come to the conclusion that it is anything outside of "weird". That said, I don't think that there is a personal god. I don't think there is an omnipotent, omniscient being judging me based on my actions; but rather I think it could be a possibility that the universe is, in its own way, leasing us a conciousness for a short period of time.

All that being said, I would be perfectly happy to "live" forever. To see how things end.

Consciousness could be more than just electro-chemical interactions in the brain. I just dunno. I'm waiting to see what the science says, that is when science can come up with a definition for consciousness. Then we can answer other interesting questions like the degree to which consciousness exists in animals. This is a very interesting question and i am waiting for the science.

Right. There's not a very good understanding of conciousness and other brain functions that gives people that sense of self. Like Aron-Ra said though, I think the safest assumption to make -- at least for the time being -- is that we just die and that's it. There's not really any evidence to support any other ideas on the matter.

I believe that when I die, I will be judged by god.

the whole thing about no consciousness of ever being after we die is really ****ing depressing. I dont want to believe that
I really think that if you are honest with yourself and your beliefs you will feel better about yourself and the world around you. A lot of people seem to hold onto God because no god seems depressing to them. The fact that there's no afterlife, sure, is depressing because the universe, in a way, comes to an end; from your point of view anyway. But I think that once you can come to terms with the possibility that there is no afterlife, your life suddenly appreciates in value. And once you become elightened to that you can begin to explore the amazingness of the universe freely without worrying "Is this a lie by THE ATHEISTS to try to destroy God?" or "Is it a sin for reading this book?" or whatever other nonsense the fundamentalists try to drive into people's brains.

The universe really is an amazing place, and it's too bad that a lot of people will never get to experience it and learn from it.

And the more I think about this, the more the fact that lots of people are being denied knowledge that is so easy to obtain, because of willful ignorance gets to me.

Sure there may be no afterlife, but my god, have you ever looked at a deep-space photo from Hubble, or looked at a movie like this?

http://www.nasa.gov/mov/187931main_Fringe081807_512FD.mov

How can you live your life with the knowledge that one day you will cease to exist, and not want to learn as much as you possibly can about the world in which your one brief flash of existence in infinity is based?

For you, nothing.

Similarly, for you, what 'happened' in the eons prior to your birth ?
