What Exactly Is "Sanctification?"

In light of the following text, and other, related ones, what is Bible sanctification?

Jer 1:5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Isn't it possible that the word could have multiple meanings depending on the context surrounding it's use? In the verse you provided I would like to think that the use of the word sanctified is to convey the idea of being set apart.

I think it would be possible for it to have different meanings in it's various contexts. What else do you think it might mean?

One of the study resources I have is a Bible annotated by Spiros Zodhiates. Mr. Zodhiates native tongue is Greek.
