I heard that Bible Study is a good way to know God and hopefully through this I'll be able to develop emotional love for God and understand Him more. I'm currently doing a breakdown of the chapters I've read today (Luke 12 and 13) and I don't exactly know how to study the Bible. I'm currently going verse by verse in a Google Doc breaking said what was said and what it means (sorry im bad at explaining things) i just wanna know if this is the right way to go about things

Try not to read the bible verse by verse. I know that sounds a bit odd. Read the bible chapter by chapter. Reading it verse by verse gives the idea that it is some kind of checklist. It isn't. It is a narrative.

There are different approaches, with different aims. You could, for example, study with an intellectual/academic focus; aiming to understand the text and its context and so on. You could study with a devotional focus; aiming to hear God speak to you, personally, through the text in a way that is relevant to your life today. And so on.

I would ask, what is it you want to achieve, and that will help you to work out how to approach it.

Hello sh3nmue, there is a 4-part teaching series that you may be interested in called Spiritual Boot Camp. It's principally made for new believers as it takes a close look at the basics of four of our most important Christian spiritual disciplines, How to Study Scripture, How to Pray, How to Function in the Body (Fellowship), and How to Witness. Also, this series will not only help you learn what the disciplines are all about, but it will also give you practical advice about how to incorporate them into you daily walk before Him.

All four parts are free to listen to and/or read online (and to download too, I believe), just FYI. Just go here, scroll down a bit when you get there, and then click on How to Study Scripture (or any of the other three).

Also, if you have questions about something that you've read, you can ask your pastor and/or come back here and ask us. You could also go to one of these helpful Christian sites.

www.biblehub.com (you can see multiple Bible translations on the same page together there, and you can also see what a number of different theologians have to say about whichever verse or passage you have a question about)
www.gotquestions.org (this has more to do with Bible topics, but many verses and passages are covered there too .. it's a great place to get a quick answer and/or to begin a study of a passage or a topic)

God bless you!! (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:1-3, 119:9-11; Romans 12:2; 2 Timothy 3:16-17)

--David
p.s. - I went through this 4-part teaching series (Spiritual Boot Camp) a little more than 35 years ago (when I first came to Christ). I still use some of what I learned from it in my walk today :amen:

Yeah, reading a whole passage (and then reflecting on it) would probably be more helpful. A study bible may be a good investment. Or listening to sermons online (helps to take notes).
Yes, a good source for online sermons is Sermon Audio: SermonAudio

Hello sh3nmue;
All of the bible point to Jesus Christ, the messiah, the Son of GOD.

the logical place to start is to read about jesus , his life and teachings.

there are good internet tools available here is one;

In Bible hub there are quite a lot of tools, maps, commentaries etc...,

Also the version of the bible is somewhat important, I did a lot of research on what version to use. the best one according to MANY experts would be the King James version (KJV) but this one the English is old English a but hard for some people the NKJ or new king James version is a good one, it is close to the original texts while keeping the proper meaning and is easier to read. Let the Holy Spirit of God open your heart it will magnify your comprehension of the texts.

Now where to start, since all of the bible is about Jesus, start with the 4 gospels, Matthew, John ( my favorite) Luke and Mark, these 4 complement one another, the parables are a gem and many Jesus explains or interprets himself. for each book start at the beginning until you reach the end, do not jump from one chapter to the next, bad idea, it will only confuse you.

After the 4 gospels, go to the Old testament, the first 5 books, it explains, man's creation, the fall and history of man, the history of the chosen people (israel) and many other things you need to know for proper understating. just start there you cannot go wrong with this and do take your time to assimilate properly what you are reading.

I am here for you if you have any questions.

Blessings

For starts sh3nmue, I'm sorry for the long post however you are not bad at explaining things. We all have our own way of explaining what we are looking for because we all are different. That doesn't make any bad, just different. I take what you said as you want to know God and develop an emotional love for God and a personal relationship with Him and I tried to address that here. There are two things I would recommend that you do. One is read and the other is study, and there is a difference.

You want that relationship to start with knowing the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, as for reading I would start reading the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. This will give you insight to the Lord's nature, His teaching, His love and the sacrifices He made for us. If you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior that is great! If you have not, this will give you the information you need to do that. Now back to reading.

Somewhere in the reading of the 4 gospels I would read the book of Acts. This will give you a clear idea of what took place right after Jesus ascended to heaven. I would follow that by reading the books that Paul wrote to the different churches. It will show you how Paul addressed different issues in different cultures. In other words, the book to the Romans will not address the same issues the same way, the books to the Galatians did because these people are of different nature and backgrounds.

Mixed somewhere within the reading of these books or immediately following these books. I would read Proverbs and the books wrote by individuals such as Jude, Peter, Timohty, etc.

Somewhere along the way of all that reading I would read The Book of Revelation. When you do read it don't expect a lot out of it on your first reading. No one gets a lot the first time. Just take what you understand and grow from there.

You can read through the New Testaments in one year by reading about 5 chapters a week but set your own pace. Don't rush and take notes of the things that jump out at you. Don't try to get it all and understand everything, because that's not gonna happen in one reading. It takes many hours of studying God's word to even scratch the surface of the knowledge within it. Which leads to the next attribute of acquiring that personal relationship. That's studying.

There are different ways of studying God's Word but the way I found was very productive for me is topic Studies. For instance, if you want to study faith. You do a search of the word faith. This will give you all the scriptures with that word used in them. Then you read those scriptures. Let's say you wanted to study marriage, which was one of my first topics. You would do a word search of the word marriage and read all those scriptures. These topic studies will lead you into other studies. If you are studying marriage then that is going to lead you to the topic of, husband, wife, love, etc. So in studying marriage, you would also do a study on husband, wife, love etc, because they are all tied to "marrage". Now when I started this in the 80s, I had to do it the old school way. You take a Strong's and you looked up the word. It gave you all the scriptures to go find in your Bible with that word in them. Now, it is so so much easier and far less time consuming. The two apps that I use now are biblestudytools.com and biblegateway.com. You put the word in the search bar, you pick which version you want to read from, you enter and it gives you every scripture with that word in it. If you use biblestudytools.com and the King James version, you can put your pointer over the word and it will give you the Greek definition of each word. This is the way I started out in the 80s and it is the same concept I use today. Personally I use the King James Version as my main bible because it has the fewest questionable scripture translations though I use quite a few different translations.

Also, as a rule I did not study other people's work on any topic before conducting my own Bible Study in God's Word on it. I also questioned anyone's personal interpretation of scripture. There were several main reasons for this. One is God's Word warns us that there is a way that seems right to a man, but the end is death. I wanted to avoid that at all costs. Another is God's Word tells us that we are to study God's Word for our self to be approved by God and to be a Workman at studying it in order not to be embarrassed, and in order to divide the word of truth. Another is that God's Word says that the Holy Spirit will teach us in all things. On a more personal level another one is. We are all going to make mistakes so why do I want to chance adding another man's mistakes to the mistakes I'm going to make, when I think I'll make enough on my own. I hope this helps you in your walk. Nonetheless, feel free to reach out to me anytime. God bless, Larry

Everything that is made normally comes with a set of instructions. Whether it is home appliances, toys, automobiles, pet accessories, clothing, food, etc. Man is no different. Man was created by God and given an instruction manual, that if read and followed carefully, he would be able to make the best of his life given him on earth. Man's instruction manual is called the Bible. The definition of Bible from World Scope Encyclopedia reads: "The book held by Christians and Jews to contain the word of God and to be of divine authority. The word Bible is derived from Medieval Latin,"biblia" in the singular number, and means a book. The Greek form of the word is a plural and means books. As commonly used it signifies the book, in comparison with which other books or writings are unworthy; or if they be called books, then the Bible becomes the book of books. The Latin word scriptura = writing, scripturae = writings, convey the idea that the scriptures are the only writings worthy of being called writings; therefore, they are of higher standing than all other books.”

With that established, let me say that any knowledge that man has of God he got it out of the Bible. All preachers preach, or teach their congregations from the Bible. If you really look close, you will see that all of man's laws have the Ten Commandments as their foundation. Now before we go any further, let's establish this very important point. "Knowing this first that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” (2Peter 1:20-21)

Also, let me show you that God's word is contained in a book. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success". (Joshua 1:8) "Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read". (Isaiah 34:16)

So, what has helped you with this?

God already knows who you are. He is interested in personally sharing with . . . us . . . not only you. And you can share with other Christians, and this is included in relating with God.

Jesus shared personally with people, and often that was while they were together with other people. Because God our Father is about family relating.

My experience is that while I am by myself, it helps to be quiet and trust God to do what He wants with me, including to guide what I pray and read and minister to others and other things.

And I discover how He corrects me. This has to do with how I am and how I care for others and pray for them and relate with them.

About getting real correction with God, I now think of two things >

Do not look down on anyone who is wrong, but care about any person and pray with hope for all which is possible with God to have the person do better.

And do not be ashamed and guilt-tripping myself about how I am wrong, but be encouraged to get God's real correction so I do better in loving and being humble.

I personally like to read the Bible cover to cover and then try to do searches on words like faith, love, abiding in Him etc and study each of these verses throughout Scripture to paint a picture of what it means. Scripture doesn’t delete Scripture it builds on it and the Bible explains Itself when we allow it to. The most important thing to do is pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you in all Truth before reading and have an open heart to follow what the Bible teaches instead of what everyone else is doing. The path is narrow Mat 7:13-14 and God’s Word is to be our lamp Psa 119:105. If having an open heart the Holy Spirit will teach you how to understand the Scriptures. John 14:26

I can also share some Bible studies if interested just send me a message.

God bless!

For 50 years I've studied the Bible. I started out with the Proverbs when I was young. Besides reading a chapter or two a day, I would take a verse, and dissect it, I would write out the complete verse on a 5x7 card under each discerned topic that I found. This helped me meditate on the verse. After a while I had a LOT of 5x7 cards. Over the years this study moved to include the whole Bible. Then of recent, I've moved it to the Computer. It now stands at over 400 pages. I'm only at the start of this study. I have cross referenced subject with links throughout, For the most part I've been writing out the verses under headings and subheadings. But as of a few years ago some subjects have become clearer. So I have gone ahead and made stand alone studies on those subjects.
This is just me. However you dive into the Bible will be worth while.

2 Tim. 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The path is narrow

a note: I was raised a JW. I was lied too. Now I have a clearer understanding of what the Bible really says.

We are blessed to live in this generation where we can listen to instead of just reading the contents of the Bible. It's the best way to get more from the Scriptures with less interruptions.

Imagine reading it while on a train on your way to work, but you have to stop when you reach your destination. With audio bible, you are able to continue listening while walking out of the train and the station area.

And if the nature of your job allows you to continue listening, it is even better.

When listening to the words of Jesus, I imagine myself as a student, present when the words were spoken.
I overlay the visuals of the Jesus talking scenes from the many movies, to try and understand the emotional response that the very first hearers might have felt.

"The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. (Ecclesiastes 12:10) I was taught the Bible by subject and Titles alone with keeping the Commandments of God. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. (Ecclesiastes 12:13) See Exodus 20:1-17).

Learning the word of God really takes time, but let's see what the prophet Isaiah says 9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

Paul does say Study to show thyself approved: "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2Timothy 2:15). So I read the Bible over and over from Genesis to Revelation.
