I heard that Bible Study is a good way to know God and hopefully through this I'll be able to develop emotional love for God and understand Him more. I'm currently doing a breakdown of the chapters I've read today (Luke 12 and 13) and I don't exactly know how to study the Bible. I'm currently going verse by verse in a Google Doc breaking said what was said and what it means (sorry im bad at explaining things) i just wanna know if this is the right way to go about things
For starts sh3nmue, I'm sorry for the long post however you are not bad at explaining things. We all have our own way of explaining what we are looking for because we all are different. That doesn't make any bad, just different. I take what you said as you want to know God and develop an emotional love for God and a personal relationship with Him and I tried to address that here. There are two things I would recommend that you do. One is read and the other is study, and there is a difference.
You want that relationship to start with knowing the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, as for reading I would start reading the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. This will give you insight to the Lord's nature, His teaching, His love and the sacrifices He made for us. If you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior that is great! If you have not, this will give you the information you need to do that. Now back to reading.
Somewhere in the reading of the 4 gospels I would read the book of Acts. This will give you a clear idea of what took place right after Jesus ascended to heaven. I would follow that by reading the books that Paul wrote to the different churches. It will show you how Paul addressed different issues in different cultures. In other words, the book to the Romans will not address the same issues the same way, the books to the Galatians did because these people are of different nature and backgrounds.
Mixed somewhere within the reading of these books or immediately following these books. I would read Proverbs and the books wrote by individuals such as Jude, Peter, Timohty, etc.
Somewhere along the way of all that reading I would read The Book of Revelation. When you do read it don't expect a lot out of it on your first reading. No one gets a lot the first time. Just take what you understand and grow from there.
You can read through the New Testaments in one year by reading about 5 chapters a week but set your own pace. Don't rush and take notes of the things that jump out at you. Don't try to get it all and understand everything, because that's not gonna happen in one reading. It takes many hours of studying God's word to even scratch the surface of the knowledge within it. Which leads to the next attribute of acquiring that personal relationship. That's studying.
There are different ways of studying God's Word but the way I found was very productive for me is topic Studies. For instance, if you want to study faith. You do a search of the word faith. This will give you all the scriptures with that word used in them. Then you read those scriptures. Let's say you wanted to study marriage, which was one of my first topics. You would do a word search of the word marriage and read all those scriptures. These topic studies will lead you into other studies. If you are studying marriage then that is going to lead you to the topic of, husband, wife, love, etc. So in studying marriage, you would also do a study on husband, wife, love etc, because they are all tied to "marrage". Now when I started this in the 80s, I had to do it the old school way. You take a Strong's and you looked up the word. It gave you all the scriptures to go find in your Bible with that word in them. Now, it is so so much easier and far less time consuming. The two apps that I use now are biblestudytools.com and biblegateway.com. You put the word in the search bar, you pick which version you want to read from, you enter and it gives you every scripture with that word in it. If you use biblestudytools.com and the King James version, you can put your pointer over the word and it will give you the Greek definition of each word. This is the way I started out in the 80s and it is the same concept I use today. Personally I use the King James Version as my main bible because it has the fewest questionable scripture translations though I use quite a few different translations.
Also, as a rule I did not study other people's work on any topic before conducting my own Bible Study in God's Word on it. I also questioned anyone's personal interpretation of scripture. There were several main reasons for this. One is God's Word warns us that there is a way that seems right to a man, but the end is death. I wanted to avoid that at all costs. Another is God's Word tells us that we are to study God's Word for our self to be approved by God and to be a Workman at studying it in order not to be embarrassed, and in order to divide the word of truth. Another is that God's Word says that the Holy Spirit will teach us in all things. On a more personal level another one is. We are all going to make mistakes so why do I want to chance adding another man's mistakes to the mistakes I'm going to make, when I think I'll make enough on my own. I hope this helps you in your walk. Nonetheless, feel free to reach out to me anytime. God bless, Larry
