this might sound like a dumb question, but why do atheists say oh god?

As already said, it just gets in your vocabulary.

But on a related note: I was raised as a kind-of-christian, and you know, whatever you're brainwashed with as a kid sticks, so something in my mind keeps nagging that the Christian God exists (not buddha, not Zeus, not Ra, not Allah, Vishnu, not Krishna, not Wodan.. out of all those possible Gods, the God that I was raised with keeps nagging at my mind, coincidence? Nah...)

So anyway, whenever I'm in circumstances of pure despiration, I still say a little prayer. I know it's totally ineffective but hey... That's also why a line like "Oh please God help me" from Metallica's "One" is so powerful to me. To be so desperate as to fall back to the little bit of hope that a non-existing God still presents.

So yeah.
