This verse is telling me that my Christianity is an active faith. I have to persistantly act in accordance with God's will for me, trusting that His joy will sustain me - His peace will strengthen and comfort me, until He welcomes me home at the coming of the Lord.

I needed to look a bit deeper than the 1 verse, so earlier on:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and to an inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while you may have to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold which though perishable is tested by fire, may redound to praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:3-7)

I believe we must always grow in our faith, stand strong and be prepared for the trials JESUS told us would come to those who are aligned with HIM. There are untold blessings and gifts to those who put their trust in HIM.

Also, a bit after your verse:

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." (1 Peter 1:14-16)

Can our instructions be made any more clear than this? We serve a holy GOD and HE commands us to model ourselves after HIM. Every time I think of measuring myself against a fellow man I recall this command.

to me it just means you need to have a sound mind about yourself to stay faithful through it all, having a resolve to stay faithful unto God, hoping and waiting on the grace or glory or blessing of God that will be bestowed upon me at his second coming. looking forward to the grace and things God has for you on that day.

it means dont allow yourselves to be deceived and drawn away and forfeit the great grace and power and glory that youll recieve for staying true till the end.

that word grace in the greek is charis, it means the graciousness, the gratifying, the gift, the favor, the joy, the pleasure....

its good stuff, its gifts, glory, favour, joy.... its not just mercy or forgivness. like you naturally think when you hear the word grace, its goodness. its good things, not just material, but its good things, it is substance.

Always be ready in mind and Spirit to be tested. What be your skill calling in the work of the Father should be sharp as the Sword. Most people can walk through life not knowing where they are or supposed to be. The ones that hear there calling and ignore it, well....

For me, it does mean our faith has to be active...but we also need to be vigilant as well, against the attack of the enemy.
