Hi All,

I've always been curious... what does the Star of David represent?

What is it's particular meaning when one looks at it?

Thanks... and actually this is just a fun hearted question, but something I've always been curious about.

Also, what is the history behind it? I'd love to hear everything, such as is their a date it started, etc? Just love to hear all about it as I don't know anything about it.

Thanks so much!

'The Star of David is the universally recognized symbol of the Jewish People. Some say this hexagram, composed of two conceptual "triads", together form the basis of Jewish belief: Creation, Revelation, and Redemption; G-d, Israel and World. Others say the 2 triads represent G-d reaching down to man and man reaching up to G-d.'

A few sites, although I have not read them closely. I did a msn search and these are a few of the results:

http://www.menorah.org/starofdavid.html
http://www.aish.com/literacy/concepts/Star_of_David.asp
http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/star.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_of_David (Is good for general info on Magen David.)

The Magen David Adom (Red Star of David) is now on the side of the Red Cross vehicles in Israel.

Hi Lilly,

It has usually been stated that the star of David is a modern symbol however some more recent archeological studies have found it engraved on some really old atificts from synagogues long before the destruction of the Herodian Temple.

One theory I heard was that David who was King, had it place on the shields of his soldiers as a symbol of his Kingdom. In the Paleo-Hebrew the Dalet "D" is a triangle (delta). David would be spelled DVD Dalet vav Dalet. This was then made into the symbol with one Dalet superimposed over the other in a way that both were seen together forming the star.

Anoher interesting symbol alledged to be the first symbol of the Church is the Messianc seal it is a menorah whose base is the upper part of the Star of David and the lower part of the Star is the tail of a fish that is pointed head down.

I would post it but I am not allowed to post images. Perhaps someone else can post it.

Thanks Charles. I am a student of archaeology and ancient histories. I find all this stuff fascinating.

I have seen the menorah with the early fish symbol attached to it.

So, the Star of David was an early identity.

Wouldn't that be awesome to find some ancient archaeological ones? I wonder if they ever have... as I haven't checked out the weblinks yet.

Also, please ignore my character, I play games with the kids on here sometimes. It keeps the children out of the trouble by being here on CF! I am so glad that young teenagers can have a safe place to come to on the internet.

So, just ignore me if I'm ever wearing a weird character -- just playing dress up with the kids....

Oh thank you too Homesick4Heaven... I'm just really tired and out of it this morning. ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz
