Political and ideological differences often aren't apparent until the topics come up. People's general demeanor often belies their radical differences. If I were to put a 'face' on liberalism it would look starkly different than a conservative face.

Probably, but I see that as a different discussion.

The meaning of the various political terms, especially Liberalism.

Literal meanings aren't as important as the consequences of political actions. Either can be made to sound attractive. Conservatism implies restraint. Liberalism suggests the opposite. As a practicing conservative restraint in many areas of my life has protected me and blessed me greatly, whereas I have seen liberalism; unrestrained behavior; destroy others.

generally there are 2 facets to this, economic and social. fiscal liberalism means a willingness to collect and spend a large amount of capital from the populace on public programs and projects, and to regulate the economy. the extreme versions of this would be democratic socialism and state socialism.

socially, it a willingness to accept new social norms, and have very few restrictions on civil rights.

from there, you have many combinations that can arise.
