:)

I think dig is one of those words that changes meaning or takes on additional meanings is perhaps a better way of putting it.

Firstly I realise it means to use a shovel or spade to make a hole :)

But there are two songs, one by the Mock Turtles , and one by The Poppies - called: "Can you dig it?" Two different songs.

I think the Mock Turtles use of "dig" I understand, but I have heard people use the word at times and thought they meant "like", and that's what I thought it meant for a while.

There is also the word : "Digg" :)

Is this something different?

Can someone help me?

"Can you dig it?" typically means "Do you get what I'm saying?" or, in slang terms, "Are you picking up what I'm putting down?" That sort of thing :)

So if someone asks you "Can you dig it?" And you respond with "I dig it," The conversation that just took place has the same meaning as "Do you understand?" "I understand."

I'll be honest, I looked that up because I thought it meant "Do you like it" too ^_^

And then the word Digg actually, apparently, refers to a news website. I guess that's what it's called. But I couldn't find another meaning of that spelling so I guess that's... it hahaha

My understanding of "dig it" is to be fond of to the point of being moved in some profound way by the experience. So it basically means to "relate to" or "understand" in an approving manner.

In the Mock Turtles song it seems to mean - can you get more than just my explanation - can you accept this change, see its a good thing for me, even though you thought things were different, and not take it the wrong way, can you move on too.

Brian Hyland also covered Can You Dig It. I like his version best, as it sounds like something Brian Wilson might have put together in one of his more lucid moments.
