  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What does the letter to the hebrews mean by "Jesus becoming a sweet smelling aroma to God" - He wasn't a burnt offering was he?

Lillen,

"sweet smelling aroma" is familiar to me, so I looked it up, and this is what I found.

Ephesians 5:2 (New King James Version)
2. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

2 Corinthians 2:14-16 (New King James Version)
14. Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. 15. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. 16. To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things?

Leviticus is where the first sacrifices were made. The temple was built and God instructed Moses that the sacrifices of certain animals in certain ways were required to cover the sins of the Israelites. If the heart of the person making the sacrifice was right before God, He called their burnt offering a sweet savor or aroma. The animal sacrifices were also a shadow of what Jesus would one day do as the perfect sacrifice.

After Jesus died and was resurrected, God's heart was delighted because his finished work was truly a finished work through his Son, Jesus and God had purchased us back and made adoption possible. No more sacrifice would ever be required.

As we sacrifice in our daily lives for Christ, our being like Christ becomes an aroma in the world and before God as a reminder of the perfect Lamb. It is the sweetest and best perfume to those who are saved. It is like a terrible odor of doom and death to those who are lost.

I hope that was helpful to you. God bless you.

Ja, it's 'figurative' ... BUT ABSOLUTELY REAL AND TRUE, because it is ALL in Christ and as Christ, spoken of.

Jesus became ALL THE LAW and was made even "sin, for us".

Who and What was "NAILED TO THE CROSS"?

Two stone tables laws were written on? YES!

All the "LAWS WRITTEN" on sacrifices, blood, burnt, baked? YES!

All 'ceremonies' and 'offerings'? YES!

All the Scriptures? YES!

It is God in Christ ALL DIVINE LAW

"nailed to the cross and taken out of the way";

It's Jesus Christ ABOLISHED and obliterated from the land of the living, and sent to hell ... in our stead. "YOU were co-crucified with HIM ... YOU were co-buried in HIM ..."

so YOU could be "CO-RAISED" in Him and with Him "from the dead"!.

It's "The Gospel of Jesus Christ" whether a burnt offering or a live offering or a blood sacrifice or a First Sheaf Wave Offering or a Live Goat Offering ... IT IS JESUS CHRIST "the all in all fulfilling FULLNESS OF GOD".
