  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What does God look like?

Have you ever really thought what God actually might look like? Do you have a personal view of God's image or have you never really thought about it. I'm writing a short magazine piece on the image of God and I'm interested in your views. For example do you have an image of God as a person guiding us in our lives or do you think of Him in another way?

Going with the Christian Bible and reasoning as to how lifestyles were 2000 years ago.

A short muscular man of dark complexion (as in Arabic, not Black), with bad teeth, bad hair, a dirty beard, possibly a bit of a gut, wearing a greyish-yellow dirty "white" robe (if he was an Essene). His hair would be closer to "long" than "short" by our standards, but would be considered quite short during the '60s.

No one can see God face without dying so I am sorry but that means no one can tell you the answer. Moses did see God's hand and his back but that was about it. When Moses cam down from Mount Sinai his face shown brightly and the people were afraid to go near to Moses. Exodus 33-34. So we do know God looks very very very very bright and His glory tends to radiate from Him. We also don't know what Jesus looks like in his resurrected body. Should we put an importance on what God looks like though? His glory is to much for me and that is enough for me to know at the moment. God doesn't want us to make images of him or any likeness of him. We people idolize to much.

God is not a corporeal body. If he were, it would be possible to provide empirical evidence to his being. One would ask "where is your God?" and the response would simply be a pointed finger and "there He is." Christians counter this argument by suggesting that God lives in an alternate realm or some such, and this is always amusing to bring up when they deny any sort of extraterrestrial life as "not in line with Christian thought."

I understand God in a dharmic way- a real but not a physical presence underlying everything. When I need to visualize, I think of God as something nonvisual like a strong wind or the beating of wings.

The physical presence of God was in Jesus (who I think of as resembling Avnar Eisenberg in "Jewel of the Nile")

You people idolize like crazy. God is not an idol and he hates people that make false images of him. Leviticus 26:1 “You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God." Is God physically in your midst or something? I know some people have seen Jesus in visions and dreams but that doesn't mean we make an image of him. I know people like to be visual and God is a visual God or he wouldn't have given us eyes but people may start to see God for who he isn't.

Stop from your idolatrous ways.

When you burn in hell I think you will have learned by then but it will be to late! Sorry, but the only way is to repent not to drink molten gold.

. . . . . There's always one.

I don't have a fixed view of the form of God, I'm sure it can appear in whichever form it wants.

I did have such a taste for molten gold today, too.

Uhh... Dude, I was going with a description of Jesus. He's God. We can agree on that. I was just stating what He'd more than likely look like before the crucifixion.

Yes, God doesn't have a physical form, but I was bringing up when He did.

It's just a question of faith, I sure The-Docter was asking people's opinions, not what they worship every day.

Especially since he got quite a few atheists to respond.

With that attitude, I can see why the atheists here could be atheists, pal. Eudaimonist was joking. When did he say that drinking molten gold was the way to salvation?

Stop from your idolatrous ways.

And you need to stop your judgemental ways, and legalism, CAUSE YOU'RE GONNA BURN IN HELL!!! NOT LIKE A NICE PERSON LIKE MEE!!!! I'M GONNA BE IN HEVEN! AND YOU'RE NOT!! YOU NEED JESUS!

Doesn't feel good now, does it? That's why you don't treat people like that. I didn't feel good typing that, I don't see how you could feel so good typing such hateful statements.

Accusations like that feel worse coming from a fellow Christian, doesn't it? Don't act you're the alpha male of the flock, and that the other members aren't fit to be called sheep. There is no alpha male in the flock, brother. Use the sense of humor, and the sense of imagination God gave you.

Well.. He said He made us in His image... and He's the God of All Eternity... which is more than I can comprehend... so He's just... there... He IS. Much more than I can picture. All ethereal and shiny... light in the darkness... love and hope and warmth... just and merciful... mostly shiny and big, though.

What does it matter? We are never going to see god...EVER. If we really love god and appreciate what he has done for us, we should not worry about how god looks like. This would be the equivilant to say " Hey, I recieved a house, food, clothing, and water from the Salvation Army bought by an anonomous doner! I was in so much need after the disaster. I want to see his face or I will not accept these gifts!"

I personally don't care on how he looks like..but then again..should we?
