What does fasting do?

My granny always fasted. what does this do spiritually?

From what I've heard it takes your focus off of material distractions, such as food, so that you can better depend and focus on God instead of eating. You can also fast things other than food, such as television and the computer.

You might think of fasting as a way to show you in one very specific, knowable way, all that G-d does for you. When we refrain from eating we are depriving ourselves of one of the many things which G-d has generously given us. When we fast and pray we are focusing entirely on him through our deprivations.

Actually it helps you to focus for a limited time on being closer to God. Also you learn to rely on God. Because to make through the fast you must rely on Him. It actually, in my experience, makes you more aware of both the physical and the spiritual.

Physically it may make you weak. I tend to get colder more easily. I can get headaches. And you must be very careful if you have blood sugar issues. Also watch for straining when moving heavier objects. You get dizzy easier.


This all assumes you are talking about fasting from food. You can obstain from other things, such as tv or whatever as mentioned above.

The best way to break a fast is with an orange. It tastes so good and is good for you. But that is just my personal method.

Fasting helps one to take their mind off material and earthly possessions. When you fast, you give up something of earthly possession. Fasting usually involves giving up food and sometimes water for a period of time. Fasting is practiced in the Bible and should be practiced by all Christians.

Accompanied with prayer, fasting is very effective. When God sees that you are able to give up earthly materials and desires for Him, that makes Him happy.

Hi Princess, My name is Betsy, I want you to know that fasting is for preparation. God prepares our spirit, mind, heart and our soul! we must have a purpose to fast.

when we fast the flesh dies slowly, the more you fast your man spirit grows. When the flesh dies is meaning, you dye to self meaning, lots of things that you liked to do/did that took/takes your time from God you will do but less or no more..
I say no more because you start hungering more for God and all you want is to be in his presence! feeling him holding you, feeling him look at you, hearing his voice, wanting to know more of him.
these feelings make you want to spend more time with him in his presence (this is called HUNGER) it's beautiful Praise God! can't really explain the feeling you would have to try for yourself..

When the man spirit grows the soul understands the things of the spirit, starts seeind things more clearer. The man spirit teaches the soul the things of God. which it is said the flesh does not understand the things of the spirit! And thats because the flesh is over the soul, the flesh doesn't want to except the thing of the spirit because no understanding and urges the thing of the world..

When God start preparation he prepares the spirit,
soul, heart, and mind little by little its a process,
and he starts when we fall into fasting and only if we allow him!!

Bless you grace, The fear that you feel is called demon of fear.,This demon comes around us to plant fear in us so that we may weaken and won't go further in Gods plan..
When you feel this demon let him know that you know who he is, tell him, fear of demon I know who you are and I don't fear you, I am a child of God and you can't torch me, "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus, I plead the blood of Christ".. Gracechick when you say this the demon will leave. He will always come check on you cause he know this is one of your weakness so everytime you feel him rebuke him and try to close that erea by believing what you just spoke and trusting more on the Lord.
Yes with fasting you feel more of a peace becuase we grow in all areas even in our authority.
Don't be afraid because God won't allow no one to harm you physically no satan and demon and no body!!

Hi. Fasting is mostly a spiritual thing, in that you may or may not "feel" anything. Check out Isaiah 58. It is commonly known as the "fasting chapter". Among other things, it is

to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke (vs. 6) and vs. 8 ¶Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy reward

I think it is a shame that as believers, for the most part, we dont fast as often as I believe we should. The idea behind it is to clear your head and like someone said above, remove distractions. Although there are many people who said that you can fast anything really, and other people said something about demons of fear keeping you from fasting... yada yada, I didnt read all of the posts. What I do want to point out though is that fasting, in and of itself is nothing.... BUT if you devote for example, times you would have been eating, to prayer and if you meditate on God it will come back to you 10 fold. Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness before he began his ministry... Just a few things to think about.

something like Isaiah 58 talks about true fastin and the reason why you fast and how u should fast.
prayin for the ppl who arent saved (oppresed) etc.
you grow closer to God.
its a sign of humility

but God cant be manipulated by fast so tis not like the more i fast the more God will change da situation. He knows better than us. but through ur fasting u get to participate in what God does and to see how he works in this situation/in this persons life that u are prayin for and etc
