  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

hmmm... sober (sober in spirit), not drunk. Not excited. Still. Stability. Not rushed. Thinking through before deciding. Calm. Not hurried. Thinking through before jumping. Seeing clearly. No haziness. In control. Aware of surrounding.

All the opposite of being drunk ("drunk" in the spirit).

Being "sober" is the opposite of being "intoxicated" (as TC has already pointed out). Being "intoxicated" means losing some level of control over your thoughts and actions, right? You lose your ability to distinguish between right and wrong, you lose clarity of mind in making decisions, and you lose your sense of balance and priorities in most areas of your life to one degree or another.

So, being "sober in spirit" would mean not losing those things, always walking in the Spirit, staying alert, focused, and ready, standing firm in truth and not getting side-tracked by all the enticements and excess that the world has to offer. IOW, be self-controlled or restrained by the guiding principles and truths you know are right on the inside rather than falling prey to and becoming "intoxicated" by the things of the world on the outside.

What do you think being 'sober in spirit' means?

:):):) No worry, I'm the non-modern type of Sobrietas spiritualis Lutheran. One of my best passages that brings forth that you cannot have both the agape of the world and Jesus too, i.e., the antithesis of any infatuation with the things of this world which churches implicitly promote in today's time, e.g., IPet.1:13 for starters. A calm, steady state of mind which weighs and estimates things aright and thus enables us to make the right decision, i.e., minus the world's allurements and:

:):):) .....first and foremost, one has to make sure that one is even in the Kingdom of God due to IIThess.2:11, 12 happening today, i.e., "delusions" intoxicating the mind. Acquire the Kingdom, God's way, then IPet.1:13, etc. kicks in and all else.
