What do you think of the following Website? (yes, I'm curious, again!)

From mainly the fundamentalist point of view (though other opinions are welcome), I am interested in hearing people's thoughts on the following Website:

Is a sense of humor a needful thing?

Thanks in advance to all who contribute their commentary. :)

Here, also, is the rebuttal to the above link for all who are interested.

Humor. It's No Laughing Matter.

Let the discussions begin (but please try not to kill one another). :)

Also: please try to give opinions while bearing in mind that the authors of these Websites are both fellow believers with nothing more than a different perspective on the issue of Christians having a sense of humor (think Romans 14). Disagree, if you must, but respectfully.

I'll give my own ideas on humor later.

From the home page of that site:

"there is only one Authorized Version of the Bible. It is also known as the Authorized King James Version"

Well, that's all I need to see to know what that site is all about. Everything on that site will revolve around the KJV-Only nonsense.

So the first link is basically just saying that laughter is hardly, if ever needed, and it's better to feel bad then laugh and feel good.

I think a lot of people will call shenanigans on that, and so do I. Too much goofiness and jesting can be bad, but having to feel sad over feeling happy? No thanks.

I think joy and laughter go together. All emotions are given for a reason including sadness, anger and each should be used when appropriate. A sense of humor is a valuable tool and we would be remiss if we did not have it and use it on occasion--just like tears.

The KJV was authorized by a homosexual apostate with Roman Catholic King (James)sympathies who did all he could to undermine the Reformation. The English Bible translation used by the Reformers, the Puritans and others was the Geneva Bible, which is still available. While the KJV is a pretty good translation, the Geneva was superior in it's faithfulness to the original Textus Receptus. Currently there are better English translations than either which incorporate the uncial and Byzantine Greek that are closer to the original than the Textus Receptus which the Roman Catholic Church held to.

Many years ago here there were KJV only wars where the KJV-only crowd got soundly trounced and left the site. If anybody wants to go another round of KJV-onlyism, OK then, lets resurrect that horse and beat it into the ground again.

You like the KJV? Pretty good translation, not as faithful as my NASB, but waaaay better than that fraud of a "translation", the NIV. I'd rather read paraphrases like The Message or Phillip's than the NIV. Zondervan Zucks, and if u don't believe it, read on what Zondervan tried to foist upon the world, the NEW NIV.

My what we would do without laughter? I like to make people laugh and smile and many do the same for me. Of course the ultimate is the joy the Lord gives us! the joy of the Lord is my strength!

A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. Proverbs 15:13 (KJV)

A joyful heart makes a cheerful face, But when the heart is sad, the spirit is broken. Proverbs 15:13 (NASB)

KJV Onlyist = misguided at best.

Laughter is a blessing of God. If I have to prove it Biblically, here:

When the Lord brought back the captive ones of Zion,
We were like those who dream.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter
And our tongue with joyful shouting;
Then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us;
We are glad.

- Psalm 126:1-3

Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. - Luke 6:21

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. - Galatians 5:22-23

Joy and laughing go hand in hand. If someone does not laugh, he is certainly lacking in joy.

I think you misunderstood my post. I am not KJVO. My point was that the site in the OP is KJVO and because of that, I would not waste my time with it.

Thanks for the input, so far.

Now, here are my own thoughts:

I believe in laughter and having a sense of humor. There is nothing wrong with it, as it has been said that "laughter is good medicine". Of course, there is the Scripture in Ephesians 5 regarding the foolish jesting, but I really don't think it is saying a Christian can never joke around at all. The key word is foolish, which tells me that it is okay to joke, but it all depends on what we joke about, our attitude/heart, and knowing our limits. And it also says in Ecclesiastes 3:4 that there is "a time to weep and a time to laugh" and "a time to mourn and a time to dance". There should be a healthy balance of seriousness and laughter in our lives.

I cannot find it on Youtube anywhere, but the Heritage Singers had a song out a long time ago called Jesus Loves in which there is a line that goes something like "Jesus loves - bubbling brooks - funny books - and silly songs, too." Now, what's not to like about that?! :)

Also, we need to take a look at some of the very things that God Himself created - a platypus, an octopus, a cactus, a tumbleweed, and a seahorse (just to name a few examples) - and if that doesn't prove that God has a bit of a sense of humor, than I don't know what else does! :)

I agree that God has given us joy and happiness. Many times God and His people were full of joy. God tells us to have joy and one of the fruits of the spirit is joy.

However when it comes to having a sense of humor, we should ask ourselves these questions.

1. Is our humor glorfying God?
2. Is it to get back at someone?
3. Is it done in a godly manner or a worldly manner?
4. Is it clean or is it filled with filth?

We also need to realize that we what say and do, even in our sense of humor, that we all give an account before God. The book of Proverbs speaks of this kind of thing and in the NT it talks about foolish speech, which is also included with having a sense of humor. Also it talks about having idle talk. All these go in with a sense of humor.

I did not misunderstand you. You wrote absurdities and compound your foolishness by daring to impugn my greatness. I am far too humble to insist you fast for a week in sackloth and ashes for the salvation of your soul, having offended such a great one in the Kingdom such as I, but you ought consider it.

And I have no sense of humor, nor have ever laughed, for that is madness according to the Preacher in Ecclesiastes.

JR

OK now, not everybody understands my jokes sometimes, just ask Albion, but can you pretend it's funny?

I always remember Bob Mumford saying that he wanted to make you grin - so that when he punched you in the teeth with the truth, he wouldn't split your lip.

"Humor" is a totally NORMAL thing among humans, and it helps to make the agonizing bearable.

Some folks wear their "Religion" so tight, you wonder how they breath at all.

Oh YES God has a sence of Humor, That's the first thing He taught me to do. To be able to laugh a myself, when I realized how ridiculous my vary best is compared to Him. His favorite phrase to me is "Hows that working for you ?" He want's us to have childlike faith, so we can be amazed at His awesomeness. In Luke 15:10 He and all heaven rejoice over each sinner that discovers Him through repentance. And He laughs at the wicked that actually believe God is like we are in Pslams 50. Who's mocking whom ? Now that's funny !!

Take evolutionists God has got to be saying OH really ? What to tell me what theory means ? In Job 38:1-4 1Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, 2Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3Gird up now your loins like a man; for I will demand of you, and answer you me. 4Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if you have understanding.

How about the people on Judgement day that say... Matt 7:22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?'

We bring all our own misery by twisting and turning what God says to fit what we think. In the Lords prayer "Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as in Heaven" In Heaven there's total obedience, total joy, and NO evil thing ! As a recovered alcoholic and generally sick twisted human being, that wasted 30 years of my life, I can laugh my butt off knowing I am more than that, with Christ Jesus in my life. And never have to go back there again, I have that little taste of Heaven now. Just a choice to think about...either way God wins. Now that's something to laugh about !:amen:
