What do you think of profanity in CCM?

Please don't use swearing as a measure of who is saved and who is not. Well I guess the Apostle Paul can't be saved because he used the equivalent of s*** in the Bible. Give me Bono's bad mouth and works that have saved thousands of life over someone with the cleanest mouth who sits at home doing nothing for the world. I also said that Bono believes in Jesus, meaning that that he believes He died and rose again and redeems mankind from their sin. If you want to judge people's salvation by their mouth...it's fine with me. I choose not to.

I'm not upset with you, I'm trying to understand how you can make a base judgment on someone's salvation without knowing very much about them and just looking at one facet of their actions. You are using swears as a measuring stick of someone's salvation instead of letting God truly know one's heart. Bono does not sleep around, he doesn't murder people, he doesn't live a double life, and he helps people dying in Africa and encourages millions of people with his music and yet, all because of the fact he swears(which, culturally in Ireland isn't that big of a deal) you are ready to say he is not a Christian. Personally I think the good facts outweigh the bad. You can have your own opinion that's fine, I'm just trying to articulate mine...

It has no place in Christian music. If I didn't care about language, I wouldn't hunt up Christian bands in the first place. The whole point of listening to Christian music is to honor God by breaking the cycle of "garbage in, garbage out."

If it's pertinent verses you people want, look up Ephesians 5:3-4. "But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving."

That supposed cycle does not exist.

Just found this thread and I have to say .... I am amazed that this issue even exists!

We have no idea of what holiness or truly being Christian means anymore. At least it would seem so by some of the CCM culture. Yikes. I am not criticizing the question....just the fact that it even has to be asked. Profanity in stuff that is supposed to be from or about Jesus.....um, NO.

Just commenting on some of the other comments here...from all I've ever heard or read of Bono's statements, he does not claim to be a Christian himself. He certainly doesn't claim U2 to be a Christian band. So whatever they do musically isn't in the CCM category.

I get the impression sometimes that Bono looks at himself as not being worthy of calling himself by Christ's name. Which actually shows a lot of humility on his part, I think. Whether or not he's a saved person isn't for me to say.

Yea, he has said that. And I agree, I feel the same way some times! But he does bring up God in about any conversation. All who want a good read should check out Walk On The Spiritual Journey of U2... by a pastor, a very knowledgable book. Great read, there is also a list of other fine books at my profile. They are not my favorite books, but recent good ones. A new list will be up soon .

I don't listen to a huge amount of bands who curse in the first place. I am in a band and we are not Christian (though I do write Christian lyrics at times), but I find no reason to curse. I think lyrics are much more beautiful and meaningful when stated in a metaphorical and/or poetic way. That's not to say that bands who curse are immature or write bad lyrics; I just like the metaphorical approach better. To sum it up, I don't like curse words in any music, Christian or not.

Amen! I agree with you entirely! While I don't find curse words, when used in the right and certain emotional times, to be wrong, there are so many better ways to words things than with swears.

I'm going to say that swearing has no place in any music that calls itself Christian. Christian music should help people in their walk, not be a stumbling block by introducing the question of whether it's really okay to swear or not...

i was doing some research on this topic and stumbled across this discussion, and felt inclined to chime in...

i believe that it all depends on the lyrics themselves...sometimes the only way to get a point across is to be somewhat blunt...

for instance:

that song wouldn't have the same impact if it said "crap" or "poop" rather than "sh**"...it gives it that reality of how nothing is perfect, everything has it's flaws...some days are going to be horrible, whether you're a Christian or not....the Christian life is not easy, it's not always super-great...there are days when everything that could go wrong, goes wrong...but that's also what helps us to appreciate the good days more, and I think that if David Bazan had censored himself just to keep a few people happy and off of his back, it would have made the song less meaningful.

I've been a rather big U2 listener for about seven years myself now and they've been quite a huge inspiration for me. Yet, as one example, if I had been a professing Christian in the band when the cover sleeve of Achtung Baby was designed (Anton Corbjin??), I believe would have raised my humble objection to the idea of making 'art' by adding a naked picture, even as small a one as it was, of this one guy into that picture mosaic thingy, you guys remember that?
