What do you think of burning (copying) Christian music CD's?

My take on the subject.

1)For the most part (and there may be exceptions) Christian Music is Entertainment for Christians, not evangelism for non-Christians.

2) They make a living off of their work.

3) The Record labels (whether you like them or not) deserve their cut of the record. They put work into it too.

4) If you have a band, and you are not in a contract with a Record label banning it, you can distribute it however you want.

the reason being, and correct me if you are truely informed, the bands do not actually see any money from the individual CD sold. The band sells either an albulm or a track to the recording company/people who distribute the discs, and they get paid so much money for each song or track sold to that company, depending on their current popularity.

The reason we dont hear this from the recording companies or bands themselves is because they have contracts in which both are making money so therefore they have no need to try to screw the other one over.

So when you burn music you are just taking money from these huge companies that can really afford the loss, and the bands arent effected either way.

you may say that it doesn't affect the artist, but because of napsterr and everyone else, recording labels don't have as many bands (the not-as popular ones) on their label as they did before. I think that that would affect the artist.

There's a lot of discussion on who's really losing out, the bands or the recording labels or whatever... but no matter who the money is coming from, it's still stealing, right? That's my view on it. Plus, however small of a chance it might be, I don't want to risk being sued or however they punish people they randomly catch downloading songs--I don't know the specifics but I know it's happened.

Personally I don't burn cds...because I feel it is stealing and because I have enough money...well I do make mixes and stuff for myself and I have burned a few hard to find cds for my friend...but I don't burn cds that one can find in a store.

Let me also throw in I have no issue with burning your own cds for your own use.

I own FIF's The End is Here, and I copied them so I can protect the originals.

I also convert many of my cds to mp3s and put them on a disk.

I don't know....I just don't think it is that big of a problem...I mean, it is...but it isn't. I burn CD's for my friend all the time. He is big into a lot of heavy metal....and I burn sample CD's [copies of the ones I BOUGHT] for him to listen to. If he likes it...he'll go buy it...but if not, he'll toss it. I don't think it'z that big of a deal? Do you? Maybe...it could be stealing...but IN MY OPINION I do not believe it is...I know they're trying to worship God, and they NEED money...but if they are really concerned with God...he will make a way for them. Especially if it is for evangelism. [AND YEAH, YOU CAN USE IT FOR EVANGELISM...TO PEOPLE WHO LISTEN TO CUSSING CONSTANTLY...A GOOD CHRISTIAN ROCK SONG CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE...I HAVE SEEN IT HAPPEN! ]

I don't burn full CD's maybe mixes of one or two, but almost all the song's I have I buy the artist's CD also. You get the Band's popular song, but almost always their CD has some really killer songs that most people don't know about so I see that as a bonus. (thats how I got hooked on Third Day and Casting Crowns)
As for the the money bit. Most Christian artists don't make jack for money. I've read articles many times that say that most career Christian artists barely get by with what they make from sales. Why? Recording a CD costs money, and when they record a CD most of the money goes back to the record label to repay them for the money spent on making a CD. Unless you are an A list band or artist (Third Day, Newsboys, Supertones, Michael W. Smith etc....) you won't make it on CD and concert sales. So I would encourage you to make every effort possible to buy artist's CDs. Especially newer bands that you like, or local bands. BTW about 98% of Christian music CD's are sold to Christians, not non-believers, so if they are losing money on CD sales (and their livelihood) we are responsible, and as Christians we should know better and support the ministry of others (besides a lot of the money those bands make goes to ministry anyways I.E. Michael W Smith and Compassion International etc....). And thats my $.02
