Because a) I don't need it b) I find it patronising c) I worry that you should spent your finite time on this planet doing something else. If I said "I'll think for you", you might get an idea of how it makes me feel when you say that you'll pray for me.

Oh dear. Any feedback?
Prayers are what they are. What is prayed for another Is mostly likely felt be he who is prayed for, though he may not know it at the time. I'm not a fanatic, but I do believe in God. If we were to become friends you would not be the only Atheist on this board who is one. Conversation is desired but not necessary. You have a wonderful day.

You too. I have friends who are Christians, too. I don't hold it against them :)

Well if you said 'I'll think of you' that would be ok. But 'I'll think FOR you' would not. I can think for myself. But, I am assuming you won't pray for yourself because you don't believe. Right?

Yep, that's correct. Reading back my post, it sounds rude. I apologise if I have offended you - it certainly wasn't my intention. I guess, what I'm trying to say (clumsily) is that as a non-believer (totally, not an ounce of doubt in my mind), that I have made my choices and I'm happy with them. You not praying for me respects those choices. I know you are a nice person with a heart full of love - and I respect you deeply for that.

Thank you and no, I was not offended. So ok I will not pray for you if that makes you happy. (fingers crossed behind my back just a little bit).

Christians don't offer prayers to atheists. They may offer prayers for an atheist for some reason.

Atheists that I've met generally mock praying so I never pray for atheists. They've also claimed prayer is the same as talking to ones self.

Aren't we supposed to pray for the unbelievers that they may know Christ?

What did Jesus have to say on the matter?

Matthew 5:43-47

You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

Psalm 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.

John 9:31 (Per the subject of this thread. Praying for atheists)

John 6:37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

What does God say about those who do not come to Jesus? Their destiny?
Romans 1:18-21

Is this thread about what happens to atheists, or about prayer for atheists? Nothing you said is relevant. Is the sermon on the mount not to your taste?
Everything I said is relevant. Is cherry picking verses in the scripture more to your taste?

Cherry picked or not, it is still Jesus' Word which as a Christian you cannot ignore. Even the lowest amongst us loves those who love us, God calls you to love those that hate you, those that persecute you, and to pray for them.

When you've read the Bible cover to cover, realize that Jesus is the God of the Old Testament and is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and recall what he said about sinners and atheists, and that a Roman pagan and Roman Bishops met to decide in their egocentrism sins to determine by their estimation and authority what constituted belief in Jesus, his mission, and later on realize that numerous convened mortal egocentric sinner counsels convened to decide what was "officially" God's word worthy of binding in a book and then designated as closed, meaning by their authority to say so God would never again speak to us save in those 73 books , later 66 after the reformation, you'll maybe see beyond what you've been led to believe.
And maybe recall those scriptures that inform you the creator of all that exists hates. He opened Hell that he'd made for the fallen angel and his minions so as to have it receive the unrepentant he judges worthy of entry there. Is that love? Wouldn't love let the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross taking the sins of the world upon him save even those sinners you believe deserve prayers that God says he doesn't hear when they try it?
Would he receive atheists when they don't believe a thing about the scriptures? When Jesus died for the world's sins? Isn't that how omnibenevolence should work?

If you would like to put it into context, imagine a beloved member of your family, the youngest one, being dropped to their knees right in front of you by a terrorist who commands you convert to his faith or he'll kill that youngster.

Would you convert?

I think you would refuse.

Then that terrorist carves the neck of that beloved youngster until their head falls off and rolls to your feet.

Do you love him?

I think the ardent kind of atheist/humanist sees prayer as foolishness because of their apriori-commitment to refusing a Universes Creator . They justify this by asserting that so long as you cant see God then he doesn't exist and therefore cant receive ones prayers. This is the 'logic' that such a person follows ; by that same logic, one should not believe in a Builder/Designer of their used home since they've never seen such a Builder nor left a picture behind of himself for identifying purposes..

I can't speak for everyone else.

I look at prayers offered for me based on the spirit in which they are given. I prefer one asks beforehand as that goes a long ways toward clarifying that spirit.

Some I welcome with open arms, others I reject in the harshest and crudest way I can think of.

Some prayers happen because people care about me, others are dripping with venom.
