What do you think about the archbishop becoming a druid?

The Druids are not a cultural organization. The only thing you need to know is they worship other then God, Jehovah Jireh. They do not believe Jesus Christ as The Son, and for the archbishop join such a group makes it look like he is denouncing his faith. But who am I to judge anyone? I dont know him, I havnt met him, he could have many good reasons for joining this group. Wether it be gaining respect of the decieved in order to witness to them furthably, or some otehr reason. My point is, dont be to quick to judge others people, you never know all the facts from whats on the internet or whats in the news.

Yet again another bit of fact ignored. Why should you be ashamed that your Archbishop has joined an organization that promotes peaceful coexcistence, intelligence, neutrality in the realm of politics and a love of nature? Sounds to me like somewhere where St. Francis of Assissi would have liked to be.

If he did not believe fully in the ways of the church I do not think that he should have accepted the level as archbishop.
Lillith, thank you for your information on druids. I personally appreciate it, as I am a pagan, and they seem to get a bad rap. As for a regular christian converting to paganism I find no problem with that, NOR do I find a problem with a pagan converting to christianity. Everyone should believe in something that they are comfortable with.

a druid member can not be christian AND Pagan at the same time. It is impossible because they both differ so much.

The Archbishop hasn't become a "Druid" in any religious sence. He was recently inducted into a Welsh National Honor Society that does pay some homage to ancient Welsh culture, and that is why they might be refered to a "Druids." But for such a "pagan" organization, all the hymns sung at the cereomony were Christian. Basically you have some people upset about this Archbishop of Wales becoming archbishop of Caturbury and they panic at something as simple as getting a national honor. Of course the headline is getting circled arround the globe and people panicing because they don't understand the Welsh.

I think the fact is that the organisation is no more connected to paganism as europe, including Christianity, is in general. It isn't a religious organization. Even if it were, I'm not the one to descide what is right for the head of the Church of England to do or not to do.

It is entirely possible that if Druids has still been above ground at the time of St. Francis decision to become a monk, he would have been Druid. Who knows, if the Druids were still around at the time, the world might have been a lot more peaceful. We'll never know.

Christians practised human sacrifice in the past, too. A general sacrificed his daughter to Jehovah because he said he would sacrifice the first thing out of his hut on his return if he won the battle. He won, his daughter came out dancing to greet him. He sacrificed her to God and was considered righteous in the eyes of the Lord....

And this is the peace loving religion that all those Christians want to get back to?

Wasn't that OT David? That gives plausible deniability to Christians. But of course we could always list the hoards of witches and other heretics executed on behalf of Christian doctrines. Someone will of course point out that the logic of these executions differs from that of pagens, but of course the condemnation of human sacrifice in pagen religions is not based on any critique of it's rationale. When people are killed in the name of God(s) that is human sacrifice in my book.

Fundamentalists have no way out of this one...

And even Catholics might find it hard to rationalise this one away as metaphor... it was supposedly an historical account that was deliberately chosen to be included in the Holy Bible as an inspirational piece.

Maybe it is meant to mean: "Don't dance out to greet your dad coming home from the war. You may get sacrificed."

The problem here, IMO, is people like to snipe at those who are leaders (in any sense). Is their hair too long?, Do they have a child who is Gay / Lesbian / Bisexual? Is their theology too liberal / conservative?

The Archbishop has done nothing wrong in joining this society, leave the man alone, his soul is GOD's not yours to turn in your hands and point out its defects!

No, the problem is that Mr. Williams joined a cult, or at least a group which many consider cultic.

Would you who said it was OK feel any different if the archbishop had announced that he was joining the Jehovah's Witnesses or that he was now a Buddhist?

The line has to be drawn somewhere.

Archbishop honoured by admission to 'Gorsedd y Beirdd' at National
Eisteddfod

[Church in Wales] The Most Revd Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Wales, was today (5th August 2002) honoured by being admitted to "Gorsedd y Beirdd" at the National Eisteddfod currently being held at St David's in Pembrokeshire. The Gorsedd hold ceremonies on three days during Eisteddfod week and admission to the Gorsedd is a great honour in Wales.

Commenting today, Archbishop Rowan said:

"When approached by the Gorsedd and invited to receive the honour of being admitted to the Gorsedd, I was delighted to accept. The National Eisteddfod and the Gorsedd are an important and integral part of Wales' national life and admission to the Gorsedd is one of the greatest honours which Wales can bestow on her citizens.

"I am also of course delighted to be following in the footsteps of my
predecessors as Archbishop of Wales - Archbishop Alwyn Rice Jones (1984),
Archbishop George Noakes (1982) and Archbishop G O Williams - in being
admitted to the Gorsedd.

The suggestion, perpetrated recently by some elements of the British daily press, that the Gorsedd is even remotely associated with paganism is deeply offensive - not just in its suggestion that I would wish to associate myself in any way with paganism - but also to those people of good-will in Wales who appreciate the Gorsedd and Eisteddfod for the colour and culture which they bring to Wales' national life"

Y Prifardd Jams Nicolas, the Gorsedd's Cofiadur (Recorder) also said:

"A lot of nonsense has appeared in some of the British daily press recently, suggesting that the Gorsedd is a 'pagan' organisation. Nothing could be further from the truth as anything other than the most superficial
acquaintance with the Gorsedd would make crystal clear.

"The Gorsedd's ceremonies are entirely Christian in tone, Christian hymns are sung and the prayers are made to God. A great many of those accorded the Gorsedd's bardic honours over the years have been Christian ministers of religion from various denominations and the higher echelons of the Gorsedd are full of Ministers of Religion.

"Any suggestion of links between Gorsedd y Beirdd and paganism or druidism is simply incorrect and misleading."

Hopefully this will put the matter to rest
