I agree with the negativism part, but then he's right in some of that too.

I don't think John is a full on Calvinist though...
His views on soteriology are most definitely Calvinist. But he does not agree with everything that Presby's and some other reformed denoms do, like pedobaptism, for instance. And most reformers are Amil, while he is Pre-trib dispy, so that is a major reason I think some don't include him as "one of them".

Something I found particularly interesting is that he comes from an SDA background. Not his family, but his community. He has a lot to say about that denom, and clearly has a heart for them.

I enjoy my McArthur study Bible, and enjoyed his series "Does the truth matter" rather eye opening...

David Hocking is one of my favorite teachers...teh book (can't think of the title at the moment) that his wife and he wrote together on marriage is just terrific...not to mention he's nearly the spitting image of my grandfather! I did a double take the first time he came to hubby's church! LOL

Both excellent teachers...I also enjoy David Jeremiah and Chuck Swindoll...and I do enjoy Raavi Zacharias as well...

Precisely why I love the guy, he is not afraid to Ruffle feathers; I don't expect him to be Correct all the time, I don't expect anyone too though. He has intestinal Fortitude and that is missing with a lot of these so called Evangelicals...
I love fire in a person on essential issues. But dividing calvinists over such issues is useless especially when the historic reformed position is covenant not dispy. If anything all calvinist should be covenant.

~ He is interesting to listen to and read at times, however he falls into the false teachings of calvinism and cessationism which are clearly anti-Biblical, and some of his 'research' such as in "Charismatic Chaos" would not pass as an even mediocre college level research paper, let alone graduate level scholarship. Oh well, no one is perfect. Take the good and ignore the bad. Study the Word and preach the Gospel.

Very good author - I particularly like "Ashamed of the Gospel: When the Church Becomes Like the World"

I also agree with NewGuy - he did perturb a lot of fellow reformed theologians with the dispensational comment.
Maybe that's what happens when we get too set in our doctrines that we push them onto our brothers & sisters...?

I only push what I consider central or essential doctrine to the faith, the other doctrines that don't affect salvation or affect our walk significantly I just share my views and let others take whatever they want from it.

I like MacArthur tho - he's a powerhouse and we need that in the days we're living in when apathy & complacency have set in on the church.

You know, I would LOVE to see a conversation on the issue between MacArthur and Sproul. They come from such different points of view on it. I think it would be a fantastic debate!

Mac is also very strongly in support of YEC. I tend to agree with him on the subject, though I have heard some interesting arguments to support Old Earth. So I'm not as "set" on that one as he is. But I'm not in the least bit ruffled by his strong stand on the issue.

He is one of the very few Christian leaders today who really is above reprove. He takes his role so responsibly and he has a passion to glorify God in all that He does. He is a breath of fresh air in our current world of hypocrisy. He's providing the meat of the word while far too many other teachers are only providing baby food.

I have to agree with that - I think a lot of things, while important, aren't necessarily worth getting worked up over - I'm more concerned over someone's salvation than say immersion vs sprinkling

not saying doctrine isn't important - it is, but, IMO, it's more like the icing on the cake

yeah I'd pay to see it~I used to be huge fans of both and still have a lot of their books on my shelves. They both would conduct themselves honorably and still walk away from the debate as brothers.

I saw them together at some conference thing - they both spoke - along w/ other prominant leaders.
I remember seeing them both -- now I can't remember where it was.
I think it was at a large church or theatre? & they had a group of them on the platform in chairs facing the audience.

hmmmmm *racking my brain*
