  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

What do I need to do?

What I am about to list are the various paths I have gone with since i started university to finish my Education.

  • Three years in the arts program before switching to the Faculty of Education
  • Completion of the BA without a major or minor.
  • English major, history minor
  • English major, no minor
  • English major, political science minor.
I have just dropped my minor once again because of GPA concerns. Whether I get into the Faculty of Education depends solely on the last year's worth of course credits. Instead of taking political science, I have decided to take French and History courses instead.

SOme time ago, I realised that what I should have done from the very beginning would have been an English major and French minor. The sole purpose of spending an extra year was to pick up that political scince minor, but I am now contemplating delaying graduation yet another year beyond this upcoming one if, and only if, it becomes evident that my grades would not be good enough for the Faculty of Education, in order to complete that French minor. I feel the courses I have registered for next year are my best chance I have of getting a GPA that will allow me to get in, so if I don't get admitted to that Faculty after this year, I probably will not get in at all.

What causes me to be hesistant to committing to taking the French minor is the fact that I would be required to take French courses with a prof whose first language is French, and he thus teaches his classes almost entirely in that language. It is very intimidating. Not only would those classes scare me, but I run the risk of having other profs do the same thing.

This is all conditional on having grades that are not good enough to get into the Faculty, but what if anything should I be doing now to help decide on this course of action?

Well, the real issue I see here is that you are wary of taking the French class...is your French any good? If you are comfortable with the language, I say go for it. The prof most likely will understand that French is not your first language and probably will cut you (and the rest of the class) a bit of slack. This is what happened when I took a German class, the teacher was from Munich and obviously spoke German as her primary language. She understood that we didn't really know all that much about the language and she gave us a bit of leeway. I did pretty well in that class, too. Just give it your best shot--worst case, you can always withdraw. It's better to know that you tried and couldn't do it rather than not trying and you keep spinning your wheels trying to graduate a few semesters from now.

Agree with acropolis; a minor is nice to have but not critical. (Unless, of course, French is for some reason required for your future career/ministry plans ...)

If you really want to learn French later you can always do that at a local community college or whatever ... I'm taking French classes part-time right now like that.

It is not about learning French for me. Having a minor in said subject would remoe any questions about my qualifications to be able to teach that subject, something i have wanted to do since i was fourteen.

BVesides, there is something so appealling about at least getting my BA right If I can't get a B.Ed. from my university...
