  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'll start with an assumption. That all Christians agree that.

1. There is one God
2. The Trinity
3. Jesus is God in the flesh
4. Jesus died on the cross, was buried and he resurrected.
5. The Bible is the word of God, it is true.

What denomination disagrees with any of these 5?

The Apostles and Nicene Creeds sum up what most Christians agree on as basic statements of faith.

I don't know of any.

Also you could add

6. Saved by grace through faith Eph 2:8-0
7. Rom 3:23 All have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God
8. Jesus will come again John 14:1-4

3. Jesus is God in the flesh
Many who call themselves Christians divide the divinity and humanity of Jesus.
5. The Bible is the word of God, it is true.
Many who call themselves Christian have a Bible without all the Books.

3 out of 5, not too bad.

None of the denominations can agree with what 5 means, but the rest seemed okay.

The Trinity is an iffy one. If you press individuals, you will find a wide range of thoughts and beliefs. Not all agree. In principle maybe. The you-know-who is in the details. This happens whenever someone creates a new word, a new concept, and try to frame it in their own, extra-biblical concepts. I know the Father is God and Jesus came out of God and the Holy Spirit proceeds from them. Before the foundation of creation they were all one, perhaps in a context that we cannot understand. I wish all the denominations could agree. But in reality... as shown on these boards, often they do not. And is it precisely because of the invented word and the vague concepts that it implies.

#5 is problematic for many. It is not that they do not agree that the "scriptures" are the world of God and should be accepted by all. The issue is what material should be included as "scriptures." My solution is what the Holy Spirit makes real to me. It is the Holy Spirit that leads us into all truth. He knows what is truth and what is not... so I use the many writings as a guide. But the Spirit make it real to me and adds it to the contents of my faith.
