• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

What disability do you have?

nothing major enough to get Disability for, but together have cut my earning potential by 75% over the last few years

Paralysed 20 years ago - told I'd never walk and offered 100% disability, turned it down - G-d got me walking and working but as a nurse I can do NO work that risks me having to do any bending or lifting over 20# - periodic low back pain (9/10) and inability to get out of bed due to pain and spasms

Neuropathy of (R) lower leg/foot due to spinal cord injury related to the paralysis

Bilateral Torn rotator cuffs - each about 90% I'm told - constant pain (sometimes 9/10) and numbness in fingers, hands and arms - permanent loss of some sensation in (L) middle 2 fingers - loss of strength in hands and of some gross and fine motor function/dexterity - would have to be out of work for about 6 months to repair - not possible, family's only income and no insurance - and no guarantee it would really help much

Hearing loss - mild but effects ability to use a stethoscope with accuracy

Cervical Spondylosis and disc herniation - pain and loss of range of motion in neck, upper back and shoulders

Trigeminal Neuralgia - intense pain of full side of face, scalp and neck (10/10 when it hits) - distracting enough so that am unable to function, think, act ..... more intense pain than I have ever had - from my back injury that paralysed me, from my chest surgery to remove cancer from my lung, from the head on auto accident that caused the neck injury.... this pain out classes them all.... gratefully the meds usually control it well...

with all these things G-d has delivered me from paralysis, lung cancer, a head on auto collision.... and I am stil able to work - light work physically and only able to find part time - but I *do* work when so many others can not! May His Name be ever praised!

I have ATHETOID Cerebral Palsy (CP). It is caused by damage to the middle part of the brain. Muscles rapidly change from floppy to tense causing many unwanted movements. Speech maybe difficult to understand because of difficulty in controlling the vocal cords and the tongue.

CP is not a disease or an illness and is not generally inherited. It is most commonly caused before or during child birth. Causes include infection in the first few weeks of life inside the womb, difficult and premature birth, and illnesses such as German measles in early pregnancy. CP jumbles up messages between the brain and muscles.

The main effect of CP is the control of movements. CP causes movement problems in varying degrees from barely noticeable to extremely severe. No two people with CP are the same. It's as individual as people themselves. Some people are hardly affected while others have difficulty talking, walking, or using there hands. Some people with CP have higher than average intelligence and can achieve high academic standards. Sometimes other parts of the brain can be damage leading to sight, hearing, perception, and mental impairments.

Just thought some background might help.

My CP basically means that I use a powered wheelchair to get around, have poor coordination of all my limbs, and a speech impairment. I am 41 years of age.

Outwardly, my body may not be the ‘norm’, but inwardly, I have the same needs, hopes, desires, and fears as everyone else may have. Ultimately; Nothing about me is hidden from the Lord! I was secretly woven together deep in the earth below, but with your own eyes you saw my body being formed. Even before I was born, you had written in your book everything I would do. (From Psalm 139) I am very independent, I have my own flat, but I need some assistance with every day tasks.

I would like to hear from females with CP who are Christian, around my age, and ideally live in the UK. Just as friends, or maybe more. I just feel there is something about identifying with someone with the same disability. Hope that does not seem weird?

God works all things out for His purposes.

Steve.

I have Benign Congenital Hypotonia - which is a fancy way of saying I have weak muscles. I can't walk long distances, I've never been able to run or jump. If I fall (which I do often), I can't get off the floor without someone literally picking me up. Even getting out of a regular chair is difficult for me. I can't go up and down stairs without help - if there's no ramp...forget about it!

Due to my BCH, the tendons that hold my joints in place aren't strong enough to do so, so I hyperflex my joints (think contortionist) which causes arthirits. Also because of this, my kneecaps are on the outside of my knees instead of over the joint...and guess where I fall most often? Straight on my knees. It's very painful.

Because of all the falls to my knees, I have just recently been diagnosed with lymphedema in my legs. Basically with all the falls, I have damaged my lymphatic system and my body no longer moves fluid from my legs, so they swell...a lot. It got to the point where I could only wear flip flops. So now, I have to wear compression stockings and bandage my legs at night to force the fluid up and out.

ETA: I am also legally blind, although I wear glasses and can see with them (not 20/20, but passable enough to drive) and I cannot drive at night.

As a result of being born at 24 weeks (full term is 40 though I hope you knew that) I'm considered legally blind (I can pretty much only see with one eye, except if I concentrate on the other one but then I can only see through the other eye so it's not really worth it to do so). And even in my good eye I don't have perfect vision and I have to where glasses. It also left me with a couple of surgical scars because apparently they ddin't know how to sew you up 14 years ago without leaving a huge scar across your stomach. But I consider myself pretty lucky to be alive at all considering the odds I was facing.
