I've had an increasing problem with the way artists and the media present Jesus as a blue-eyd, Anglo-Saxon man. After all, he was born in Palestine into a Jewish family and heritage, so surely he would have looked more like that?

Or do you think it really doesn't matter so long as people believe?

Just my thoughts - be interested to hear what others think.

I believe you are right in that he is not blue eyed. Also I do not believe that it really matters.
However I also believe that many will be schocked when they see his brown eyes.:) :D

Yes, I certainly don't believe that He looked like the common pictures that depict Him as a blue-eyed, light skinned man. I imagine He looked like any of his first century Jewish contemporaries in the middle eastern region, black hair, brown eyes, dark complexion, not unlike the Arabian culture.

ISA 53:2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

I guess he "looked" to the eyes like an ordinary Jewish man of his time. But I imagine that his eyes were soft with love and compassion for us, his creatures!

I like that thought!

....I don't know why but it's his eyes I long to see...Can you imagine what it will be like to gaze into his eyes?

I think I'll be on my face pretty quick!

I think He probably did not look like the paintings and drawings that we see. I once saw a photo display called something like photos of people who look like Jesus and they had men of every race and perhaps a woman - all wearing white robes (I doubt Jesus had white robes) and a "Jesus wig" - it was very interesting.

I think in His glory He appears very differently.

The appearance of Jesus Christ after His assention..
  • "Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden girdle round His breast; His head and His hair were white as white wool, white as snow; His eyes were like a flame of fire, His feet were like burnished bronze, refined as in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters; in His right hand He held seven stars, from His mouth issued a sharp two-edged sword, and His face was like the sun shining in full strength. When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as though dead. But He laid His right hand upon me, saying, "Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the Living One; I died, and behold I am alive for evermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades." (Revelation 1:12-18 RSV)

Trish, there's a thread maybe in General Theology Christian Only about Jesus never laughing. Your avatar was the picture I was thinking of but I couldn't remember where I had seen it. Why don't you stop in there and post in the thread and say - here's Jesus with his head thrown back and a big smile on his face and probably a big laugh.

We've missed the human incarnation, but we'll see him as he really is fairly soon! :)

Thanks Barb.. I just might do that. I love this picture because I take myself so serious sometimes. And when I see it, it reminds me, that what I consider so important sometimes, he's smiling, just waiting until I come to the end of myself.^_^

Jewish/Hebrew.. I would guess probably semetic looking, like brown? But who knows. I use to know a guy when I was on active military duty working for the chaplain who refered to Jesus as "that boy from Iowa" in a very mocking tone. I know from Isaiah 53:2 "He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him." This is in contrast to his being disfigured beyond that of any man, refering rather to his appearance. Jesus was ugly.

I think isaiah 53;2 is referring more to the Hematidrosis, the beatings, the crown of thorns, those Roman brutes etc.

Jesus would not be a pretty sight after all that.

:sigh:

He was a carpenter, (which means he built houses without powertools).

Which kind of blows away the wussy, effeminate image made so popular through religious art.

(If you can make jesus look like an effeminate pansy then you're instantly going to turn a heck of a lot of people off)

way to go catholic church
