  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I live in Winona Lake, big time Grace Brethren town, but lots of people with Grace backgrounds go to the Chruch I attend, Warsaw Community Chruch, with ties to the Willow Creek Affiliation, certainly not a predominately YEC group. My background is Mennonite, conservative Bible-believing up-bringing, with a large history in an charismatic group which emphasized theology. In that church the pastor was a former seminary professor who taught YEC, ala Whitcomb and Morris. I also attended a charismatic Bible school that taught Gap Theory, but that school as since embraced YEC and the six days of Exodus 20:11.

Reporting progress in TE poll - most over there so far are Lutheran (5), Presbyterian (3) or Other (6) at this stage. No baptists at all! Quite a stark contrast to here (as I am writing this poll has 0 Luth, 1 Pres, 5 Bap and 3 Other). Very, very interesting.

That's what I would expect, given how literalist and YEC most Baptist churches are.

Though, I have met some TEs who were Baptist or went to Baptist churches, I would expect that to be the minority.

I think a good question is, did your denomination influence your stance on origins, or did your origins stance influence your choice of denomination?

The message of the church is Jesus Christ. The "how" of creation seems obvious to me from Scripture, but is not, in the end, in any way important to the message of sin, faith, and salvation. I happen to be YEC by my own investigation. When I was saved 13 years ago, I was a solid "no god" evolutionist one minute, and probably a TE Christian the next, literally that quickly. But as I read and studied, it became obvious to me that YEC is the only plausible explanation.

My church rarely if ever discusses it. No church I've ever been to does. Creation isn't the focus of the Church. Jesus is.

My experience of Baptist churches in our area is that they avoid the issue because it is controversial, and have no official teaching on it at all. When the issue is raised you have a few strong YECers, and a whole lot of OEC and TEs as well, the proportions depend on the particular church of course. My family had to leave a Baptist church over disagreements around creation - we are YEC and this was a big issue with some elements of the church, eventually had to just move elsewhere.

I can see how more traditional type denominations could be more supportive of TE though, given the fact that it is these denominations that are also going against the Bible in other ways such as in allowing homosexual ministers. These older Protestant denominations are becoming more liberal, so would be a comfortable place for people with liberal views such as TE.

Really?
That's not my experience with them out here.
Interesting.

I was born and raised Baptist, have been involved in Penecostal. I currently am a member of a Baptist church, but I dont label myself as a Baptist.

Personally, I refuse to put a Label over my head to what Denomination I am. There for I am Non Denominational.
