Ok the question is what is sin. Here goes...
"Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression."Rom 4:15
"But sin is not taken into account when there is no law." Rom 5:13
"For apart from law, sin is dead." Rom 7:8
The complete virulence and power of sin stand exposed only when the law enters with its restrictions and prohibitions. We know if we drive at 100mph along the road in most places(if not all), it's speeding and illegal because there's a law which states so.
This leads to the next question: what is the law?
"The commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not covet, and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: Love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law." Rom 13:9-10
"What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, Do not covet."Rom 7:7
Paul gives an indication of what law is in place. He obviously refers to the 10 commandments which has the 10th about coveting. But yet, he said earlier that love is the fulfillment of the law. How does love come in?
We know that the law is good. 1 Tim. 1:8.
I delight in the law. Rom. 7:22.
Whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth
therein . . . shall be blessed. James 1:25.
We know that the law is spiritual. Rom. 7:14.
The 10 commandment law, contrary to popular belief, is not against us because it is called the perfect law of liberty and we can delight in it. Also, there's a spiritual aspect to it. Let me suggest a hierarchy now.
The top level you have LOVE
Second level you have Love towards God (1-4th commandment) and Love towards man(5th-10th commandment). I regard the second level as the letter of the law.
Third level you have the spiritual level where it goes into further detail. For example, Jesus said that having anger towards your brother is breaking the 6th commandment of Thou shalt not kill. The spirit of the sixth commandment obviously does not replace its letter and tends to magnify it (see on Isa. 42:21); The same may be said of each precept of the Decalogue, including the fourth commandment (see on Isa. 58:13; Mark 2:28). Jesus came to earth to show clearly to man on what is a true christian by giving and demonstrating the spiritual aspect of the law.
Finally to sum it all up.
"Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.(top level) And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. "Matt 22:37-40
That's why "love is the fulfillment of the law." Rom 13:10"
