I have quarts and pints of canning jars. What are some ideas to do with them. I have seen candles made with them but am looking for something not so expensive to do (candle wax is expensive and I would have to buy the coloring and fragrance etc.) any ideas?????

Candles was my first idea, but there are other less expensive options. You could do Gifts in a Jar...things like soup or cookie mixes (just the dry ingredients) with a ribbon and a gift card. You don't have to give them away...some, like hot chocolate mix, are nice to have around for yourself or your family. Here's a link with some good "recipes", but if you google "Gift in a Jar" you'll get lots more.

Thank-you both for your suggestions. I did find a few websites that had recipes in a jar and I might go that route. I have canned in the past that is why I have the jars but I don't have room for a garden anymore so I really don't do much canning. Thanks again.

Thank-you so much, you are all the best.:)

Something I thought of too was filling a jar with those little decorative soaps. Maybe paint the lid or put a fabric cover on it. It would work out real well if you knew what their bathroom deco was.

Why not put a cute christmas picture around it and fill it with sweets. It would be a card and gift in one! Your friends could use them as sweets jars and think of you each time they use then.

Put your family's picture on it. Or a cute picture of your pets or kids. Something personalised and festive!

you can take your jars and put some clear mini christmas lights in the jar and fill with potpourri cover the top with some lacy material tied on by ribbon.makes a nice christmas present. one of my customers gave me one. ( as the lights get warm , the potpourri gives off a light scent.

another way to use your jars is to make up cookies in them, take a recipe for example like choc.chips. put in your ingredients one item at a time, (layering effect)then after you have put all the ingredients in the jar, put the lid on, cover the top with a some pretty material and ribbon and attach the directions for baking to it on a fancy card that you can make yourself. great idea for christmas also, i got one for christmas a couple of years ago and it just takes as snap to dump everything into a bowl and mix and bake. good luck, hope this idea and the one before were helpful to you.

You all have wonderful ideas. I found a crochet patten for making tops for the jars so now I can sew some and crochet some. There are about 7 patterns, balloon on top, strawberries, grapes, daisy, pig, jelly beans, and a rose. That should take care of decorating the outside. One of the websites someone recommended here I found a recipe for dog cookies, that would be a great gift for the dog lover. If anyone would like a copy of the pattern PM me and I can fax it to you or email it, (faxing I can do the emailing I will try).:)

I bought a pattern that used wide mouth quart jars and you decorate them like people and put signs on them - like "I LOVE CHOCOLATE" and fill the jars with candy. The head is a round styrofoam ball and put sock over it and decorate with hat etc. It was really cute - the pattern also had animals too. I think it was a McCall pattern.

That's a really cool idea. My fiance and I did that for his mom so she could make cookies and such. She's glutin intolerant and it's sometimes hard for her to find flour and stuff she can have.
One of my friends did that for wedding favors. On her RSVP card she had added a line asking everyone's favorite cookie. Each person got their own jar with cookie mix in it!!
