  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have a Nikon D40, got it after the death of my Minolta a1 from the insurnace company.

Likes: takes a very good quality image

dislikes: most things are menu based, not quickly tweakable with dials and no information panel on top.

other than that it is superb. especially with a 300mm equiv lens and vibration reduction.

Canon RebelXT w/battery grip, Sigma 10-20mm, Sigma 50-500mm, and Canon 18-55mm.

I absolutly love this camera! I've put in over 51,000 shutter actuations to date in climates from 10*F to 125*F, in rain, snow/ice, fog, and direct sunlight. Been in dry areas, damp areas, and some very dusty/sandy areas, even held it out the window of an airplane a couple of times. It's all held up without a single glitch.

It's going to be an excellent backup body once I get that Canon 40D.

I have an old Nikon film point and shoot that is rarely used any more - don't even remember the model name LOL. My regular camera is a Canon Powershot G2. It's old, only 4MP but takes decent photos for what it is. But I'm really looking forward to upgrading to the Canon Rebel XTi sooner rather than later.

Nikon D70. A little out of date: it's only 6 MP, and doesn't have the best high-ISO performance in the world. It can take nice pictures, though, and the smallish file size is nice (as long as I don't want to crop much). Good battery life, pretty good control layout -- not as nice as a professional model, but good.

I have a Sigma 10-20 and Nikkor 18-70 (kit lens), 70-300 VR, 50/1.8 and 85/1.4. I really like my wide angle and telephoto lenses. The two in the middle both have problems: the 18-70 back-focuses slightly, and the 50 is mushy below F/2.8. I keep meaning to write to Nikon and ask about having them checked. The 85/1.4 is a very sweet portrait lens indeed.

Just FYI, ask for the Opteka grip... it's about half the price and the only difference is it doesn't have "Canon" stamped on it. That's what I've used the entire time.

Yup, it's even made from the exact same mold as the Canon one. The plastics may be slightly different, but other than that the only difference is the logo. I just got mine as an early birthday present and it's great!

Amazon is probably the best deal on em btw. Only $70.

Truth be told, I still prefer my Nikon F3 35 mm and Zone VI 4x5 film cameras over the various digital cameras I've tried, but I picked up a Panasonic TZ1 for grab shots and when lugging a full sized camera isn't worth the hassle, especially when bicycling. There are times (like when the pics are just going to be emailed) when I appreciate uploading to the computer instead of processing film in a wet darkroom :D .

You had an F3, what was it like I understand they were the pinacle in their day. I was looking at a second hand f4 once but went with the EOS 3 instead. I very nearly went down the Nikon route instead of the canon.

The F3 actually outlived it's day because it took years for the pros to warm up to the F4's plastic body.

The F3 has one serious flaw, the electronics are fragile. I had mine rebuilt a few years ago and the parts had to be shipped from Japan since by then it was long obsolete.

A camera is only as good as it's lenses and Canon had caught up with Nikon by the time the F4 came along. They've been neck and neck ever since.

All my life, I used Nikons and Leica for 35mm cameras, so when I went digital, I picked the...

Pentax *istDS. Stupid name, great camera. At the time, it beat any DSLR for features, ergonomics, and quality in its price range.

Looking forward to getting the K10 soon.

Well that would have been a shame wouldn't it? :D :p

:D :D :D .......................but in all seriousness I have a great deal of respect for the cameras and lenses that Nikon makes, that said a camera is only as good as the person behind it, sure a good camera will give us certain advantages but does not make up for years of practice.
