So cool to find another Large Format user! I have a Wista 4x5 monorail, with only two lenses so far--Schneider-Kreuznach 150mm, and a Fujinon 90mm for the wide-angle shots. I do mostly architectural photography, some landscape, and almost exclusively black and white.

Canon Rebel and 'holy cow' to you, wildthing~jeepers...how many is that for you?? I hope to afford a digital one o' these days though...I mean, I just bought a manual 'cause I'm all old-school but it'd be nice to keep on the 'up and up' on modern tech. once in awhile

I don't think they have a digital camera that has 40x optical zoom. One thing you need to look for is optical zoom not digital zoom. 10x optical is nice if you have a camera with 4.0 pixels or more to give room for cropping.

Remember the best way to get a great clear picture from cropping is to use a tripod.
However if you want zoom the best route would be to go with an dslr. The rebel is an awesome camera. You can buy zoom lenses to go with it.
I have a 80-200mm that I just love.

i have a pentax spotmatic 500, i believe it is. it's from the late 60's or early 70's. no real addons, except some filters i got for it.... works great, but it's 100% manual. challenge finding new batteries for the exposure meter, though! and i never use a flash - dont know how.

Hi Reaba, I have owned a 10D for about a year now. In may ways, it is the most amazing camera I have ever owned (I also own several Pentax 6x7's and a Sinar 4x5 ... all film cameras). It is hard to believe that it is possible to get this much image detail and rich colors from so small an image sensor (I think it is only about 60% the size of a 35mm negative). But, while incredible things are possible, I will warn you that you need to be extra careful about camera shake, as any inconsistency like that is more noticeable (because of the additional amount of enlargement you need to do due to the smaller sensor size). That is why I used medium format cameras when photography used to be my main source of income. With a big negative, you can get away with all kinds of little errors, and no one notices because the amount of enlargement is so small and the errors are therefore magnified so little. With the 10D, I most often use a faster shutter speed than I would have ever needed to use with a film 35mm camera.

I also had problems with blown-out highlights with my 10D, but by underexposing all shots by about 2/3rd's of a stop, mixed with a Photoshop 'action' to correct highlights, or Photoshop CS's Shadow/Highlight function, I have all but seen the end of that problem

I also find that my 10D auto-focuses PERFECTLY, until it gets to infinity. There I always have to tweak it manually to get perfect focus. Perhaps it should go back to Canon to correct this problem, but I don't mind manually focusing my camera when necessary.

One tool you will want to have in your possession is "Focus Magic". It is AMAZING at helping to bring back ultra sharp focus in post-processing, especially if a little camera shake is the culprit behind the soft focus.

Finally, lenses. I own 2 Canon zooms, a 24-70L and a 70-200 IS. The 24-70 is, by far, my most used lens. BUT, given my druthers, I would ALWAYS use the 70-200 IS. Of all the lenses I have owned, it is far and away the most amazing. It is such a pleasure to use, especially with the IS feature. I can hand-hold shots that I wouldn't have dared try to hand-hold with any other camera/lens. It is VERY expensive, but it is worth every penny if you can afford it ... and need it. And the best part is seeing the final image that that lens has helped me to create.

In closing, I LOVE my 10D. It has renewed a great love for photography in me, even to the point that I love doing the most mundane things with it for my work. It has been a true blessing to me (and others I hope) in many ways. I have no doubt you will enjoy yours


I have spent nearly the entire year since I bought my 10D taking care of sick family members, so I have very little personal/artistic photography to show with it right now. I have started a small gallery of some of the pictures I have taken at pbase.com/dwave if you'd like to see some examples (they look by far the best at a high resolution ... like 1280 x 1024 ... and on a flat panel if at all possible).

I have a Olympus 750 and I have always liked that camera. I want to upgrade it to the 770 when I get the chance. I also have a Nikon D70 and it takes good photos, but it is not as sharp and as clear of a photo as the Olympus. When Olympus comes out with their next new SLR, I plan to sell the Nikon and get the Olympus. It maybe another 6 months or so before they upgrade their SLR digital camera though.
